After having enjoyed tv-viewer for some time on my amd64 desktop with ubuntu 10.04 and Hauppauge WinTV PVR 350 I installed it on my laptop. I think it almost works but need just one valuable tip of someone who does understand video capture. An overview of what works and what not is here:
system:
ASUS EEE 901
Ubuntu 10.04
AverTV Hybrid Volar HX (A827)
AVERMEDIA-Linux-x86-H826D-0.10-beta
from C038A827H826_Installer_x86_0.10-Beta_091126.zip
What (partially) works:
1) me-tv 1.1.2 receiving DVB-T works out of the box with both video and sound
2) mplayer SVN-r31264-4.4.3. Analog tv with both video and sound
e.g. using this shell script with these three lines
PLAY=Nederland_1
CHANNELS=22-Nederland_1,25-Nederland_2,26-Nederland_3,42-EEN,43-Canvas,55-BBC_1,56-BBC_2
mplayer -v -vo xv -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0:norm=PAL:chanlist=europe-west:channels=$CHANNELS:input=0:adevice=/dev/dsp1:forceaudio:immediatemode=0 tv://$PLAY
3) tv-viewer 0.8.1.1
channel search works but viewing results in black window after the rotating balls have stopped

Please help me taking this last hurdle, thanks, Janwillem

i have no good news for you - TV-Viewer does not work with all analog devices. It is designed to work with tv-cards that have a build-in hardware mpeg2 encoder. This leads to the effect as you described, sound but no video. Devices like this should be supported by xawtv, kdetv or tv-time.
Best regards
Christian

That's a pity. It is correct, tvtime and xawtv do work but I do think the gui of tv-viewer and m-tv so much better. So if there is no work around I will have to live with that until somebody publishes a new software. Thanks for replying, Janwillem

Thank you for the credit!! i don't think there is someone out there still developing a software for analog TV. You will have to live with what already exists.
