I actually agree as well, since it makes it easier for the rest of us (e.g., me) to understand and test the changes, and help steer things in the right direction. I think our mental and time bandwidth to go back and integrate code from a forked codebase is far too low. (For example, it's been almost 2 years since the Label tool was created as part of GSOC 2008, and it's only just recently been integrated into the main codebase, to be released in an upcoming version.) For those who want to keep an eye on things, I suggest subscribing to the tuxpaint-cvs mailing list, where you should see the CVS commits flow through as they happen.
