Tux Paint 0.9.31 introduces the "--uifont" option to override the font we request for the UI (button labels, etc.), which is currently "DejaVu Sans".

A suggestion from @dolphin6k is to utilize different default fonts, based on locale.

For example, a Japanese font ships with Tux Paint: fonts/locale/ja.ttf -- currently, "a custumized subset of GenJyuuGothic-P-Normal-Subset.ttf * for TuxPaint" from Shin-Ichi (replacing something from as far back as 2006), which he says looks better than DejaVu Sans.

Note: I'm unclear whether the font sunder fonts/locale/ are used anymore, since SDL2_Pango is now used for the UI, rather than SDL_ttf directly!

Allowing Tux Paint team members to pick fonts that best suit their locale, and use those instead of DejaVu Sans, when uifont isn't being used to override things, would be helpful.
