When using the black colour, the ‘arrow’ and ‘short line’ directional brushes don’t draw anything on canvas. (The ‘triangle’ brush works fine.) Tested using latest Git version.
I believe I am reproducing this (with any color), but only when simply clicking and releasing. The large triangle brush draws something, but the larger arrow does not.
As rotational brushes, they will avoid drawing anything on the canvas until you have moved a short distance, to determine which direction to use. However, I agree that they should work like the others, when simply clicking/releasing, without drawing any distance.
(See for example the cat brush, which is a directional brush -- click and release in one spot, then do the same in the other, and you'll see the two frames of the cat sitting / licking its paw).
If I change the brush spacing to the very minimum, I am able to get the large arrow brush to draw something, however it's a right-pointing arrow. I believe it should be an up-pointing one. (Probably a matter of 0 vs 90 degrees.)
I don't consider this a showstopper bug, but I do agree it should be addressed at some point. Thanks, Karl!

I don’t get the behaviour you describe, but the behaviour in my original bug report. When I click and drag, nothing appears on the screen if I have black selected as the colour. I still the hear rhytmic painting sound. Increasing or decreasing the brush distance has no effect.
This only happens with the colour black. Very dark (almost black) colours work fine.

Per bug 254 it sounds like Karl is on SDL 1.2.50 (whereas I am on 1.2.15, under Ubuntu (Kubuntu) 20.04.4 LTS), and I'm wondering if there's a bug in SDL 1.2 that may be causing this issue as well.

I'm asking folks on the -devel and -users lists if they can let us know if they see similar behavior, and under what version(s) of things (SDL, X/Wayland), to see if we can pinpoint the problems (both #253 & #254): https://sourceforge.net/p/tuxpaint/mailman/message/37676638/

Similar to my comment on https://sourceforge.net/p/tuxpaint/bugs/258/#163a, I wonder if we should close this was "wontfix" (or really, for me, "cannot reproduce" :) ), since we're focusing on the SDL2.0 version of Tux Paint moving forward.

This also happens if I draw a black line with the line tool using these two brushes.
But it doesn’t happen on the

Closing since it doesn't affect the SDL2 version (which is what
masterbranch is now!)
