Shall we enter? Caroline ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Bill Kendrick <nb...@so...> Date: 9 October 2010 02:23 Subject: [Tuxpaint-users] [fwd] Announcing Google Code-in To: Tux Paint <tux...@li...>, Tux Paint Users < tux...@li...> The Tux Paint project, as part of the larger Tux4Kids organization, has taken place in Google's "Summer of Code" program for the past few years. The program below, like their "Highly Open Participation" (GHOP), which was a way to get high school students involved in open source projects. GSOC is for programming projects, while GHOP was for other aspects (documentation, art, etc.) It seems that this new "Code-In" program is like the two programs combined (programming projects for high schoolers). I haven't looked into it closely, but I'm betting Tux Paint and the other Tux4Kids projects would benefit from participating. In any case, there might folks out here who are interested to know about this outside of Tux4Kids' involvement. (e.g., educators, parents who have older kids, etc.) Enjoy & have a nice weekend! -bill! ----- Forwarded message from Carol Smith ----- Date: Thu, 7 Oct 2010 11:27:22 -0700 From: Carol Smith Subject: Announcing Google Code-in Hi everyone, We*re pleased to announce that we are planning to run the Google Code-in contest starting this November. This is a contest modelled on the success of our pilot program the Google Highly Open Participation Contest that was run in 2007-08. We will again be giving 13-18 year old students around the world an opportunity to get involved with open source projects doing tasks ranging from documentation to outreach to coding programs. We*re looking forward to a fun contest this year and hope you*ll consider participating yourself if you are eligible or spread the word to friends, family, and colleagues about the program. Please check out the timeline [0] for more details on the program. We encourage you to join the Google Code-in contest discussion list [1] and announcement list [2]. Please see our blog post [3] for further details and contact me directly if you have specific questions that aren*t answered in the FAQs [4]. (Despite how "in progress" the current CVS version of Tux Paint has become from the last GSOC ;) ) I'm also happy to get the word out via the tuxpaint-users mailing list and tuxpaint.org website, if Tux4Kids does sign up and get accepted. -bill! |

Hi, On Mon, Oct 11, 2010 at 12:33 PM, Bill Kendrick <nb...@so...> wrote: > On Mon, Oct 11, 2010 at 12:35:19PM -0400, Brendan Luchen wrote: >> >From the small bit I've glanced over the description, this sounds pretty >> cool. Think I can mentor if necessary. At last year's mentor summit there was a discussion of the GHOP program, which was the predecessor to Google Code-In. It basically involves having us post a TODO list of tasks that are within the capabilities of a high school student, and the students then claim them and turn them in when completed, getting a "bounty" of $100 US for each three tasks completed in a satisfactory manner. There isn't the same months-long commitment that GSOC requires. So, I think we could participate. I don't have a great amount of T4K time at the moment, either, but I probably can post some TODOs. Suggestions from the group are highly welcome. David |
