It is a very important work, I hope Free Software will advance a big step forward with GPLv3 and with the migration (of a very important) project as Tux4Kids is. OTOH, tuxhistory is based on TuxMath 1.7, so if TuxMath did the migrations I suppose I can change also the license notices in TH. ¿is this correct? If so, in the week I will change this also in TH. In debian/ubuntu you can get it very easy: type sudo apt-get install libtool or you can build a new libtool: wget http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/libtool/libtool-2.2.10.tar.gz tar xvzf libtool-2.2.10.tar.gz cd libtool-2.2.10 ./configure make sudo make install I hope this helps! -- Jesus Mager [www.h1n1-al.blogspot.com] |

Hi, I got the git clone at last. Thank you. In trying to install it, I reached the following portion in the INSTALL.txt file: { autoreconf --install; ./configure; make; sudo make install Tuxmath supports "parallel" or "vpath" builds to avoid cluttering the source tree with object files, so a clean way would be (starting within the top level): mkdir build cd build autoreconf --install .. ..configure make sudo make install } I did the following: { myname@ubuntu:~$ cd Desktop/tuxmath/ myname@ubuntu:~/Desktop/tuxmath$ ls ABOUT-NLS CMakeLists.txt COPYING intl-patch Makefile.am options stamp-h.in tuxmath.spec.in acinclude.m4 cmake-modules data linebreak mingw po tmlin.sh AUTHORS config.h.cmake doc m4 NEWS Portfile tuxmath.desktop buildw32 config.rpath Info.plist mac_cplibs.sh notesblurb README tuxmath_preview.spec.in ChangeLog configure.ac INSTALL macosx nsis src tuxmath.sh myname@ubuntu:~/Desktop/tuxmath$ autoreconf --install Can't exec "libtoolize": No such file or directory at /usr/bin/autoreconf2.50 line 189. Hi everyone, I have finished cleaning up all the copyright and license notices in Tux Math, and the code is now uniformly licensed as "GPL3 or later". In case anyone wants to use previous versions of our code in a GPL2 project, there is a notice under doc/ stating where to get tuxmath-1.8.0. Tux Typing and T4K_Common will be reviewed and tidied up in due course. Best, David |

Just now, it took about 1-2 minutes for the above operation, during which there is no additional output after "Initialized empty Git repository in /home/dbruce/gittest/tuxmath/.git/". Also, if you want to contribute to the project, you should create an Alioth account and request to join Tux4Kids at https://alioth.debian.org/projects/tux4kids/. It will be easier to contribute if you have a full "pull/push" repository, although git supports other modes like emailing patches quite well. Cheers, David |

What platform are you on? Linux, or something else? It sounds like you may have visited the site with a browser, but the way I get the repository is to type the command on the command line (i.e., the shell). I just tried a "read only" pull and it worked fine for me. Hope this helps. Anything that you find confusing about the documentation, please keep track of that, and help us improve that, too. Hi there, I'm not very sure of this, but the command I used was: git clone git://git.debian.org/git/tux4kids/REPO.git that is, replace the "http" with "git". I followed the instructions on the homepage as you said Tim. I installed SDL, Automake and Git. Now it came to the source code of the project. I went to the git repository. There it showed the following "pull-only" command: git clone http://git.debian.org/git/tux4kids/REPO.git I replaced the "REPO" with "tuxmath". But the message I got was: Initialized empty Git repository in /home/MYNAME/Desktop/tuxmath/. git/ I find a hidden folder there, but no source code. I might have done something stupid. But I am just getting started. Please help me to proceed. Thank you. |

I mostly had in mind the fact that our programs themselves don't do anything security-critical, but they still are code that is executed on the user's machine, so an altered version could still be really bad. As it stands now, users are protected, but only to the extent that they are willing to take my word that the Alioth site with the self-signed cert really is our legitimate download site. Of course, they already have to trust that *we* aren't bad guys - a valid third-party SSL cert doesn't show that the packages themselves are free of malware. Still, I'm getting tired of having to explain this repeatedly to concerned would-be users, and who knows how many folks are simply scared off that we never hear from. Maybe we should take our downloads off of Alioth and put them on SF if the Alioth guys won't address this. David |

Hi Matt (and Bill), > On Sun, Aug 15, 2010 at 12:09:08PM -0400, MATT CARLSON wrote: >> Hello, >> I have a small problem maybe you could help, everytime I try to download >> tux math command and tux typing it sends me to a download site that says >> "This Connection is Untrusted" >> I am using windows >> Thank you >> Matt This issue has existed for years. Our download site is on Alioth, which is run by the Debian Project and is completely upstanding and reputable. The problem is that Alioth uses SSL certificates that are not signed by a widely-recognized certificate provider, which causes browsers to generate frightening-sounding warnings. All this means is that there is no third party that is attesting that you are really connected to our download site. So, you basically just have to take my word for it that the download page really is our site, and I can assure that it is (and that our Windows builds are free of malware). Of course, you can run virus-checkers and so forth on our packages if you are really security-conscious. For things like online banking, a valid SSL cert is obviously critical, but I've never quite understood why our package downloads have to go through https:// rather than plain old http://. I've filed a bug report about this with the Alioth admins, but they don't seem to be very motivated to do anything about it. Sincerely, David Bruce |

I don't *think* there is, unless Wenyuan added significant code in the past week. His source documentation, though, I think is just in master. In other news, it seems alioth only provides for single files on https://alioth.debian.org/docman/?group_id=31080, which is not really what I had in mind. I put up an RTF version of the docs, but IMO it's not nearly as pretty as the HTML ;) -Brendan |

Actually, it was an error (mine) in the pkg-config check for t4k_common that kept the correct compiler flags from being passed to gcc. Now it's fixed, and all combinations of autotools and cmake builds for t4k_common and tuxmath seem to work, AFAICT. Brendan, Wenyuan - is there still anything in master that isn't in commonification, as far as you guys know? I'm thinking the best route may be to (in effect) rename commonification "master" and rename master "old_master". We just would want to be sure that all of Wenyuan's work is in commonification. Hi, This Monday was the suggested "pencils down" date for GSoC, so we are supposed to be spending the remaining time getting the documentation in order. We definitely got some important code written for Tux Math/Tux Typing, and reportedly have a preliminary playable version of Tux History (haven't tried it yet myself). There still is a lot to do before the new work is releasable, though. As we all discussed, it was a pretty strong goal to get to a releasable state by the end of the summer. Since we seem to be a little short in some areas, it is particularly important to have clear documentation of where the projects stand so others can carry on the work in the "off season". This also is a good opportunity to tighten up our source code license documentation. We've talked a bit about whether to move to "GPL3 or later", and everyone I've communicated with has either been neutral or in favor of making this transition. No one has requested that we stay "GPL2 or later", and most importantly, no one has suggested that any of the code be "GPL2 only". We already have some third-party code in the tree that is unequivocally "GPL3 or later", so the program as a whole is already GPL3. No matter what, we definitely should get a proper copyright and license notice at the head of every source file. So, unless anyone objects, I plan to put proper notices in place to make all of the existing code "GPL3 or later" as of the next release. This is definitely allowed for code that was previously "GPL2 or later". I will include a notice telling where folks can look if they want to get previous versions of the files that were "GPL2 or later". I don't think there is much practical difference for use if we use GPL2+ or GPL3+. The one thing I have thought about and investigated is compatibility with Apple's iPhone/iPad dev agreement, in case someone wants to try to build for these platforms. The GPLv3 very explicitly prohibits the type of lockdown that Apple uses, so I don't think there is any dispute that a move to GPL3+ would prevent a iPhone/iPad port. Sadly, I don't think our current licensing would really allow it, either. We certainly would have to get rid of any third-party GPL3 code (liblinebreak, mainly), but I think we could deal with that. But even GPL2 is not quite compatible with Apple's terms. There are indeed a few GPL iPhone apps, but only because the devs aren't asking Apple to comply with the source code distribution requirement. This really became clear recently when someone packaged the GNU project's "GNU Go" game for the iPhone. When the GNU/FSF folks, as copyright holders, asked Apple to comply with the GPL, the outcome was that GNU Go was simply removed from the App Store. So I don't think we could put our programs in the App Store without either us or Apple ignoring some of the terms of the GPL. Cheers, David |

Hi again, > I'm wondering if it > might be something like a t4kcommon vs. t4k_common name mismatch > between the build systems, or something like that. (Dave rewinds brain - beep - beep - ka-ching!) I think I most likely caused this one with a commit a few days ago to clean up tuxmath's configure.ac. In the lib check for t4k_common, I think I may have changed a variable name. My guess is that it worked on that laptop because I had the lib installed both as "t4k_common" and "t4kcommon". I'm at work now on a Windows box, but I can look into it again tonight. IIRC, we decided on "t4k_common" as the name of the lib, right? I think we should go through t4k_common and tuxmath with grep and make sure the naming is consistent. David |

Hi Brendan, > Uh-oh...which references are missing? I don't have any unpushed changes > AFAIK, and definitely not any that would break the build. I think everything in t4kcommon - lots of T4K_* functions, debug_status, and variables for the menu images - stop_rect, stop_button, and so forth. > I ran into this error a lot, early on. It's a t4k_common-specific image, and > should go somewhere like /usr/share/t4k_common/ upon installation. Make sure > it's being installed correctly? Run with --debug-loaders and look for > messages from find_file and T4K_CheckFile? OK, looked into that - basically the autotools build of t4kcommon wasn't installing the data files because they were listed as EXTRA_DIST, which means stuff that needs to go into the tarball but doesn't get installed. They need to go into a "dist_foo_DATA" variable to be both installed and distributed. I fixed it just now and pushed it. Now the cmake build of tuxmath seems to work correctly (whether t4kcommon is built with cmake or autotools). Will investigate the autotools tuxmath build as time permits today. I'm wondering if it might be something like a t4kcommon vs. t4k_common name mismatch between the build systems, or something like that. Cheers, David |

Hi all!! I'm pleased to announce that TuxHisotry is now playable! It is in a very early stage, but the basics are here. Villagers can recollect food, wood, stone and gold, they can create buildings, buildings can create units and units can attack other units and buildings. The game make custom objects from a XML file, so the game is flexible for future improvements (TuxHisotry at this moment can't load custom unit or building images). We also can load a map from a XML file that describes also the existing objects in map. Nevertheless the game panel is hard coded, and some other parts of the game. Make the game complete flexible is a big task. I hope some of you can compile the game and give me some feedback. Of course the basic mechanism is here, but improve the whole game and release it will take much more time, and ARTISTS! 2010/8/12 Wenyuan Guo <guo...@gm...>: > Hi all, > > I have improved the source code documentation for the parts that I > have worked upon this summer. Hi David, Do you have any local changes on your machine that you haven't pushed into tuxmath's commonification branch yet? I get a flurry of "undefined reference" errors with the autotools build. If I build with cmake, it builds without errors, but the resulting program exits with an error: Uh-oh...which references are missing? I don't have any unpushed changes AFAIK, and definitely not any that would break the build. dbruce@emperor:/usr/local/src/git/tuxmath/buildcmake$ tuxmath Initializing Tux4Kids-Common 1.0.0 load_image(): ERROR could not load required graphics file menu/stop.svg SDL: SDL_RWFromFile(): No file or no mode specified I ran into this error a lot, early on. It's a t4k_common-specific image, and should go somewhere like /usr/share/t4k_common/ upon installation. Make sure it's being installed correctly? Run with --debug-loaders and look for messages from find_file and T4K_CheckFile? > *Publish HTML docs--who's taking care of the website these days? Me I guess, meaning really no one since about the beginning of GSoC. If you mean putting them in the "Docs" section of our project on Alioth (https://alioth.debian.org/docman/?group_id=31080), I can give it a shot although I am only minimally familiar with that feature of the site. That should work; it doesn't really matter, as long as it's googleable. A quick cmake . && make doc should spit out the relevant docs for you. Actually, assuming I can upload there, I might as well do so and take care of keeping it up to date. Let's find out! -Brendan |

Hi all, I have improved the source code documentation for the parts that I have worked upon this summer. The changes have been committed to the repository. Good luck and best regards to everyone!
