Facebook allows users to create Pages, and multiple admins can be assigned to the page. (Presumably, this would let someone step down, and let another person take over.) I don't think there's a need to create a new _Facebook account_ for this purpose. See, e.g., the Tux Paint page: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6825055151 -bill! |

Can you give the > link > to the page? And I think yes, two pages can have the same name. It is currently hidden from the public. I'm at work and the firewall blocks facebook, so I can't "publish" it or whatever it's called on facebook. But it doesn't really have anything worth keeping - go ahead and start a new page from scratch. However, I would suggest that you create a tux4kids-related email to set up the account, rather than using your own main email, so that care of the page could be handed over to someone else if you can't do it anymore. I'm assuming facebook doesn't have a way to transfer pages from one user to another. If it does, I guess it doesn't matter. Thanks, David |

OK, how do I get the Tux4Kids "domain name" transferred so that you can access it. Currently it is tied to a facebook account with my gmail address as the user name. We should likely create some sort of tux4kids project facebook account, maybe by making a tux4kids gmail address for this purpose. Thanks, David |

Hi folks, I'm not a facebook user but seemingly everyone around me is. I have created a facebook account and grabbed the page name "Tux4Kids". I messed around with it for about an hour, but really it is just a placeholder that isn't visible to the public. If there is anyone with enthusiasm for tux4kids who is proficient with facebook, I'd be happy to have you set up an attractive page for the project. Thanks, David |

Hi Aviral, Since we spoke, I've learned a few things. Mainly, there is an autoconf m4 macro intended for autoheader use within libraries (ax_prefix_config_h.m4), that creates the autoheader stuff with a prefix to avoid a "config.h" name collision. I added this to t4k_common, so now our autoheader file is called "t4k_common-config.h", and similarly we have e.g. "T4K_COMMON_HAVE_SCANDIR". I also changed our replacement alphasort() slightly so that the function signature would match that in /usr/include/dirent.h. After these changes, the autotools build appears to work fine. In particular, there are no errors with a subsequent tuxmath build that uses the new t4k_common. So, autoconf is definitely supposed to be able to support the kind of platform-specific function compilation that we want. Regarding cmake, I had spent some time adding the checks for scandir and alphasort, but still had a problem in that the resultant config.h didn't seem to be located by the compiler/linker. Strangely, after working on the above autotools fix, the cmake build now appears to work without problems. I have definitely not modified cmake to add a prefix to config.h like I did with autoconf. Any attention from the cmake gurus out there would be most welcome. Importantly, I have not yet tested t4k_replacements.c in a build for a platform that lacks scandir/alphasort, to confirm that the replacement procedure actually works. I will try to test the mingw-cross-env crossbuild with the latest t4k_common as soon as I can. Best, David |

Hi, I agree with you Dave. We need to brush up more the tuxmath codes and other tux4kids apps for the next release. I am willing to help to clean and add more features for the tuxmath. I know that the awesome GCI students are currently working right now for the tuxmath like Aviral and Johndhel. So maybe you can allocate the tasks that you are planning to execute. I'm looking forward for the nice future of the tux4kids application especially this year. Not related to GCI, are there any other programming tasks > that Tux4Kids needs work on? There are always things to do. So far, the main venue to discuss what needs to be done has been the mailing lists. As another student pointed out, we have not made use of the bug tracker available at our Alioth site. We added lots of new features during GCI. I would mainly like to get all of this new code fully stabilized, and new releases made of t4k_common, tuxmath, and tuxtype before we add anything else. t4k_common - there was one remaining GCI task (migrating convert_utf.c) that should be done, then we should try to get a t4k_common-0.0.4 out ASAP. Of course we want to make sure both cmake and automake builds work, etc. tuxmath - lots of important new features added, including extensively revised Factoroids, important LAN fixes and features. We also had some new music files contributed that have not been incorporated yet. When t4k_common-0.0.4 is done, several files in tuxmath will become dead code and can be removed when we start using the t4k_common equivalents. tuxtype - in the immediate future we need to finish "porting" tuxtype to use t4k_common. This has been started as a GCI task. For both tuxtype and tuxmath, we have *many* new or updated translations. It is fun to see the projects moving forward again with respect to user-visible features. For some time we have been mostly concerned with the underlying code. Regards, David Bruce |

Great! "But" I guess thats all you can get now. If someone submits new graphics we will have to decide based on the graphics whether they are worth replacing the old ones or not. It's impossible to decide this without seeing the new graphics. So for the artist it means that she cannot know whether we'll accept the work or not. cheers, Holger |

Hi, Brendan 1. No. (I'm a developer; not an artist) 2. Some people are willing to work for free, as they pursue game development (art) as a hobby. 3. Still, it's good to discuss things with the group, I guess. 4. All I meant was that a small change in the art, will be equivalent to a great change in the general experience people have with the game. I've already sent messages to a couple of people I've worked with before, and I think at least one of them would accept... Regards, Aviral |

Hey Aviral, Four things. 1)Are you volunteering :)? 2) While it would certainly be awesome to have two more artists on board, it's sadly not that easy. FOSS contribution--art, programming, admin or otherwise--is *fundamentally* on a voluntary basis. It's hard to find people who are willing to do this stuff gratis, outside of their pesky real jobs, and it's actually quite remarkable that it does happen at all. To be fair, programs like GCI are changing the landscape quite a bit, and there are orgs who pay some developers--Fedora and Mozilla come to mind--but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) we're not one of them :) 3) Because this is free software, you have the freedom to do what you want, with or without a consensus (though it's always nice to agree). Iit's a "do-mocracy." If there's something you'd like to see happen--just do it! (See #1). Don't expect immediate results from asking around on forums (I'm sure there will be competition), but that's no reason not to try. Go for it! 4) The game's art might not be award-winning, but it's not that bad, is it? You should see some of *my* programmer art. It scares small children. Cynically yours, Brendan On Sat, Jan 8, 2011 at 9:57 AM, Aviral Dasgupta <avi...@gm...> wrote: > As GCI draws to a close, I can't help but think about how TuxMath might be > improved further. As GCI draws to a close, I can't help but think about how TuxMath might be improved further. One of the things that I think we can do is come up with better graphics. The currently used graphics look (mostly) like programmer art. So, I think we should get: 1. A proper spriter. 2. A comic book (digital) artist. What do you guys think? I want to have some sort of a "comicbook" intro sequence to the game. Also, the comet, asteroid and ship images *need* to be replaced. If we agree on this, we could make some "official" posts to game development sites like gamedev.net, asking for an artist to join the team. Regards, Aviral |

I am a teacher in an elementary school. Another teacher told me about tTux Math Command. It looks like a really fun program to help kids work with math facts. However, it needs to be leveled. Kids learn simple addition and subtraction facts before multiplication and division facts. When different levels are thown at kids, it comes very frustrating for them. If it is possible for the program to set up different levels this would be an excellent program? Thanks for considering this. -- Judy Grant Pope |

I think I got this one fixed with the latest commit to t4k_common - I had inactivated gettext in t4k_common.h "way back when" until we were closer to a release. So, the last tarball release of t4k_common (0.0.3) definitely does *not* allow display of i18n text. We need to get another release together before the current tuxmath can go into any distro. There are a few more things I want to get migrated into t4k_common during Google Code-In: - liblinebreak (done) - throttle.c (done) - convert_utf.c (GCI task pending) - cross-platform replacement functions, e.g. scandir/alphasort/basename (student working on it). As we get the "API" stabilized, pretty soon we should start work on a t4k_common-based tuxtype. Cheers, David |

Anyone seeing proper native language support in the current tuxmath? I can't get the program to display in anything other than English. Based on debugging output from --debug-setup (which I just worked on a bit and pushed into git), gettext() does work correctly right at setup. But the menus and credits don't display i18n text. I put a new function in setup.h/c, print_locale_info(), which hopefully we can use to track down what's going on. I'm wondering if the problem has something to do with the split of the menu code into the t4k_common library - maybe the code in t4k_common is looking in the wrong place to find the message catalogs, or something like that. Any thoughts? Best, David |

Yeah, building t4kcommon from automake will give the shared library error, you might either sudo ldconfig or set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /usr/local/lib. Hi Aviral, > Cmake builds for T4K_Common (master) are broken. I moved liblinebreak under src/ two days ago, and fixed the Automake build, which wasn't quite correct. I tried to update the cmake files accordingly, but I didn't test it and might have broken something. > After building and installing t4kcommon and tuxtype successfully, tuxtype > fails to start with : > > /tuxtype: error while loading shared libraries: libt4k_common.so.0: cannot > open shared object file: No such file or directory Does tuxmath still locate t4k_common properly? Both tuxmath and tuxtype seem to locate t4k_common when built from the latest git on my desktop (64 bit Debian Sid). You might try running "sudo ldconfig" to update the linker, although AFAIK that wouldn't explain why tuxmath works and tuxtype doesn't. Also, make sure that t4k_common is spelled identically for both apps. Best, David |
