I haven't heard any. When you type, it's supposed to make a keyclick noise. Also, if the keypad is up ("--keypad" or "-k" option), clicking the mouse will cause the same keyclick (and tap in the numbers you clicked). Note: An older version still supported the mouse controls even if the keypad wasn't enabled, which was a bug - fixed now. -bill! |

Bill is planning (last I checked ;-) to add some sort of dirty-blitting method for the game. This can greatly increase speed on slower machines (it's what we did in Tux Typing). The disadvantage is that if your hardware supports double-buffering (which isn't a CPU speed issue, rather a graphics card/support issue), then you can't ensure consistant frame-rates (which is why he's planning on doing it both ways). -- Sam "Criswell" Hart <cri...@ge...> AIM, Yahoo!: <criswell4069> Homepage: < http://www.geekcomix.com/snh/ > PGP Info: < http://www.geekcomix.com/snh/contact/ > Tux4Kids: < http://www.geekcomix.com/tux4kids/ > |

Bill, I know you've already got the operator switches, and I think this is the right way to go. Once we get all the options we originally wanted as command line switches, then we can (hopefully ;-) get some feedback as to what else is needed. I mean, even if a command line option we add isn't needed/wanted in the graphical options screen, it would probably still be nice to have (you can never have too many command line options ;-) > > Anyway, the zip archive is here: > > http://www.silvan.demon.co.uk./beos/tuxmath-20010907-beos.zip > > Sam, should we add this to the "Files" available on the SourceForge page? > (I think I'm going to let you manage file release from now on. ;) ;) ) Sure, I can handle them if you want. As for what to do with the file, Idunno. If we let Dave handle it on BeBits... it makes it easier for us (heh, heh, heh ;-), and there is a common place for BeOS users to get them from (and a known BeOS app place at that). The only problem is what happens if BeBits closes shop (I mean, BeOS on the desktop's future is kind of up in the air thanks to this whole Palm deal :-( Whereas if we stick it on SourceForge, we know we will have the files for a longer time (in spite of VA Linux's troubles, SourceForge is still going strong thanks to community support - financially and technically) Perhaps as a compromise, we could give Dave SourceForge file release technician status on SourceForge, and let him release them via SourceForge. Hi guys. Here's the first version of TuxMath for BeOS. It's dynamically linked against SDL v1.2.2. I created a BeIDE project file - it's in the zip archive. I'm really impressed - you've already achieved an awful lot. I have a quick comment about the speed/difficulty level - I certainly didn't find it "easy", so i'm not sure how well it's going to scale down to younger children (but I guess that's what the option screen's going to be for?). Anyway, the zip archive is here: http://www.silvan.demon.co.uk./beos/tuxmath-20010907-beos.zip Regarding a Mac OS X version, I'm waiting for OS X 10.1 and a newer version of SDL (and SDL_image, SDL_mixer) before I'll be able to get it done. Should be a simple re-compile then though.... Bill/Sam, is it OK for me to create a TuxMath page at BeBits (and upload the archive)?? --- David |

The tarball snapshot I released today has been announced to the world. :) (Hope that's alright :) ) I posted to SEUL/edu and libSDL mailing lists, submitted a newsitem to LinuxGames.com, and added entries at HappyPenguin, LinuxForKids and Freshmeat. I've made a little image which has a blurb about the fact that we'd (at least I'd) like feedback from educators on what kind of options would be good. I encourage the reader to subscribe to this very mailing list, but if they'd rather not, I provide my personal address. I'm going to work on Waves and scoring a little bit. At that point, I'd like to call it 'beta' and release it to the world. :) (Prob this afternoon some time) What do people think? -bill! |

I've added an "install" target to the Makefile. By default, it copies the data files to "/usr/share/tuxmath/" and copies the executable to "/usr/local/bin/" These can be overridden when you first run "make" (and then when you run "make install", you need to specify them again), by giving "make" values for "DATA_PREFIX" and "BIN_PREFIX". Also, the "INSTALL.txt" file has been fleshed out quite a bit. It includes info. on requirements (hardware, software, etc.) and where to get libSDL. It finally includes compilation and installation instructions for Linux/Unix. Also, "SDL_mixer" is no optional. Run "make nosound" to compile it without "#include <SDL_mixer.h>" or any references to mixer stuff, and it won't try to link with "libSDL_mixer.so". :) Go 'cvs update' now to see! :) -bill! |

Might it be the sourceforge site? Uhm.... that would be dependant on the release. We could do one of two things here: 1) Link to the source code release on sourceforge every release (meaning we'd have to update the spec file each release) 2) Link to a common location (such as SourceForge's file release page, or to someplace like this http://www.geekcomix.com/dm/tuxmath/source/ ) and then never update that section of the spec file again. Personally, since I'm a "path of least resistance" kind of guy, I'd prefer the second choice. But, I guess "The Right Way" would be the first choice. So, Idunno. Take your pick and advise us whichever way you did. > Source: http://www.geekcomix.com/dm/tuxmath/tuxmath-pre.alpha.tar.gz > URL: http://www.geekcomix.com/dm/tuxmath/ > Distribution: Tux4Kids <http://www.geekcomix.com/tux4kids>, Sam Hart As soon as we can get the funding, we will be registering the tux4kids.org domain, so this will change (hopefully ;-) Other than that, everything's zen ;-) Well... Wow, looks good. I would recommend getting the preliminary spec file to either Bill or myself so we can get it in CVS. Of course, there will have to be minor revisions to it once we do have a release (because the makefile that's in there doesn't yet install, AFAIK) Also, one other note- We need to get rid of "Digial Monkey Software" from the vender information. Digital Monkey is something that could get us in legal trouble (there are already several "Digital Monkey" entities out there). Just wanted to remind everyone that I'm going to be hard to reach this week. In addition to the NMI classes I'm taking, I also have jury duty :-/ I may be sporatically checking/replying to e-mail.... but I make no promises ;-) Provided jury duty doesn't last, I should be back in the swing of things this upcoming weekend. -- Sam "Criswell" Hart <cri...@ge...> AIM, Yahoo!: <criswell4069> Homepage: < http://www.geekcomix.com/snh/ > PGP Info: < http://www.geekcomix.com/snh/contact/ > Tux4Kids: < http://www.geekcomix.com/tux4kids/ > |

Well, I'm presumably waiting for some OggVorbis music from Sam. Down the road, it might be nice to tweak or replace the current sound effects with stuff that's a _little_ mellower. At the very least, make all of the sounds fairly the same volume, so that it's less irritating. :) > The options menu doesn't work for me, but it may be that it isn't > implimented yet Exactly. It's very skeletal at the moment. I'm very interested in feedback from educators on what kind of options they'd like, and the best way we can implement them before I go to far. As Sam mentioned, there _are_ command-line options to override the operators. I've moved all of the ".txt" files out of tuxmath's root directory and into a 'docs' directory. This is 1/2 to make the directory much cleaner, and 1/2 to make moving the docs into a "/usr/local/..." kind of place (during 'make install') easier. Please do an update. You'll probably need to check out the "docs" dir, too. -bill! (_still_ getting used to CVS :) ) |
