Hi all, I finaly got a completely working build of tuxmath for windows. Tested on WInXP. You can test it from here: http://www.ycombe.net/tuxmath/ I have stolen the code for application data directory path in tuxpaint. The option file goes to application data directory, i have open it in notepad, modified it. That works. David, can you merge the diff from my modified source? Source use autoconf/automake, and some code is modified in fileops.c. Some empty files (AUTHORS, README) are here because of automake warning. I will think about a nsis script to make a correct installer. Regards, -- yves |

Thanks - I am looking forward to investigating this later today! My daughter attends school in the ninth largest public school system in the US, and some of the folks at her school are quite interested in Tuxmath, but for all practical purposes it needs to run on Windows. I would love to switch the school system to Linux, but that is not a very realistic initial goal. Maybe, however, Tuxmath will be the "foot in the door" that gets the process started! -- David Bruce |

Hello. I succeeded building tuxmath on windows, cross compiled with mingw32 (in my edubuntu box). But it crashes on start, because of file/directory operatons. Deactivating all file operations (options reading/writing) give a running tuxmath for me. http://www.ycombe.net/tuxmath/ The zipped file is the running build. the tar.gz is the modified source (autoconfiscated and file operations deactivated). the two sh files are the scripts i use to compile. If you want to cross compile it yourself: 1) install mingw32 on linux (apt-get install mingw32 for me). 2) install precompiled dev files (lib and includes) for SDL, SDL-image and SDL-mixer in the $target directory (look into the cross-configure.sh). 3) install libgw32c (the dev file): http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/libgw32c.htm in the same directory. 4) cross-configure.sh with --with-sdl-prefix option 5) cross-make.sh (Configure.in and Makefile.am set windows build to use ./data for data path.) -- yves |

Hello everyone, Tuxmath now saves summaries of the last ten games in the player's .tuxmath directory - questions asked, questions missed, percent correct, etc. Holger - this would be a good one to upload into Sid. Cheers! -- David Bruce |

Hello all, Fresh commit - main points: 1. Tim Holy's feedback speed control included - this adjusts the comet speed dynamically to the player's performance, speeding the game up if it is too easy and slowing it if the player is having trouble. There are several parameters to fine-tune behavior. 2. Cleanup/reorganization of config file with (I hope) better comments. Cheers, -- David Bruce |

I use KDevelop to work on Tuxmath, and the next major version of KDevelop will have much more support for CMake, so I basically tabled any further investigation of CMake until that time. I think it would mean that we would do something other than "make && sudo make install" to build and install Tuxmath. My main obstacle in building Tuxmath on Windows has been getting SDL_image set up properly. Hi Richard, There isn't really a very functional website for tuxmath currently. I am currently the main coder/maintainer, and the source code "lives" at https://svn.tux4kids.net/tuxmath/. My understanding is that the "official" site would be www.tux4kids.net, but it hasn't had much maintenance for some time and is currently down. On Sunday 17 September 2006 19:45, Richard June wrote: > I have in the past built tuxmath for a few varieties of linux, but > currently I need a version for windows. I would also like to be able to build the current version for Windows, but I haven't yet gotten a functioning Windows build environment using either Cygwin or MinGW. I am now looking into Dev-C++. The last several subversion revisions almost certainly will not work under Windows due to new code added to read and write config files, but anything up to revision 10/"version 0.8" should work (at least, there's nothing I put in up to then that should be OS-dependent). Hello Kai, Thanks for your interest in tuxmath! I am by no means a build wizard, but = I=20 think the problem is that the build process can't find SDL_mixer.h and=20 SDL_image.h. On my debian system, the SDL dev files are in three separate= =20 packages (libsdl1.2debian-alsa (for the main SDL lib), libsdl-image1.2-dev,= =20 and libsdl-mixer1.2-dev). Hi David! You can use Dev-C++ from Bloodshed.net as a free (as in freedom) IDE for GNU GCC and GNU GDB on Windows. You need to create a project, add files to the project, and setup the project - which files to include - like libsdl and so on. There are a number of option tabs when setting up a project, so if you get stuck figuring out how to setup the IDE, one thing to keep in mind is how C programms are made in general - preprocessing, compiling, optimizing, assembly and linking. If you know in which step you are supposed to be, it is a lot easier to find where to put the relevant options. It's been a couple of years since I did it - I wanted to compile a version of TuxMath with backgrounds images of my family - kind of primitive "themeing" - to engage my son - keep it personal and interesting. It worked great at the time, but sadly the hard drive is no longer available so I can't just send you a copy of the project. My son is a lot older now (8) and doing well in math, so TuxMath the way I remember it is not really something he would like to play anymore. If someone where to make a drill program like TuxMath using Tremulous or BZFlag it might be a different story. Then _I_ would like to play too! :-D References: http://www.bloodshed.net/dev/devcpp.html http://www.tremulous.net/index.php?section=shots http://www.bzflag.org/screenshots/ Wednesday 13 September 2006 15:21, David Bruce wrote: > > AFAIK all of the Windows builds available in various places on the web are > very old. I'm having an issue compiling the program. I've downloaded the source from = CVS=20 and tried to compile. I get - first off all - an error with SDL_mixer. Hi Hamish, Thanks for you interest in tuxmath. I am currently the primary programmer/maintainer. Tuxmath now reads and writes config files, so you have complete control over the questions to be asked as long as you don't mind some very simple use of a text editor. A very recent version has just been uploaded to Debian unstable - since you are using Ubuntu, you should be able to very easily upgrade to it by adding the relevant line to your apt sources.list file (/etc/apt/sources.list): deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free Then "apt-get install tuxmath" should give you a current build. After you runt the program the first time, there should be a directory in your home called "./tuxmath" with a file called "options" in it. The options file is well-commented. Edit it as desired, save it, start tuxmath and it should reflect your selections. > I tried a windows version today and it doesn't have any of the options > that can be seen in linux. AFAIK all of the Windows builds available in various places on the web are very old. I would be *extremely* interested in getting the current version built for Windows, but I don't have much relevant experience and so far have not been able to get a Windows build environment set up properly. > I am the ICT coordinator in the Western Isles (Scotland) and would > love to see this go out to our schools to help with "mental math(s)". > Thanks for this great piece of software Thanks. -- David Bruce |

Hi I use Math command on an Ubuntu distro and love the option menu, where you can configure the max total and limit it to addition/subtraction only etc. My 6 year old boy still needs further limits to the difficulty, an add 1 only or add 2 only up to a max of 5 or 10 would be even more fantastic for our infants. I tried a windows version today and it doesn't have any of the options that can be seen in linux. I am the ICT coordinator in the Western Isles (Scotland) and would love to see this go out to our schools to help with "mental math(s)". Thanks for this great piece of software Regards Hamish Budge |

I submitted a patch to do that back in February on the sourceforge patches thingy. http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1432483&group_id=34443&atid=411030 Saves the options selected on the screen to $HOME/.tuxmathrc when they are set, and loads them on startup. Command line options take precedence over the saved options. Tested on Linux, not on Windows but I've made an attempt. [to make it work on windows] -- Andrew |

Dear Yves, I have incorporated both of your recent suggestions into Tuxmath. 1. Tuxmath now accepts the name of a config file as a command-line argument (--optionfile filename). It looks for a matching file in the current working directory, as an absolute pathname, in the user's tuxmath directory, in tuxmath's new "missions" dir in the data directory, and finally in the user's home. I would love for you to test this feature and advise me of any problems. 2. Question formats now set for each operation individually. Thanks, -- David Bruce |
