Hi, AFAIK, your project needs to get approved before you can start, but anyway, if I were you, I'd probably get my hands on SDL 2.0 from http://www.libsdl.org/hg.php and see what's changed. This will probably involve changes to the build scripts and several changes throughout tuxmath itself.
