What platform are you on? Linux, or something else? It sounds like you may have visited the site with a browser, but the way I get the repository is to type the command on the command line (i.e., the shell). I just tried a "read only" pull and it worked fine for me. Hope this helps. Anything that you find confusing about the documentation, please keep track of that, and help us improve that, too.
