On Linux systems, the typical default (e.g., for distributor-supplied 
packages, or a default make install) is to have the SVGs in some system 
directory, to which users do not have write access.

Perhaps there should be a fallback in which the user's own .tuxmath directory 
is used for the cached PNGs? In a subdirectory named "cached" or somesuch?

Colorado. They typically hold scientific meetings in fun places, and we are 
sneaking a family vacation in afterwards.
