Okay, it looks like the answer to these mailing list headaches can be found 
here:

Basically, we will have to live with multiple replies and missed mail until 
they upgrade to the next version of Mailman (which allows the users to set up 
reply-to munging on a per-user basis).

So the way to reply to messages on these mailing lists, and ensure your 
replies get posted to /everyone/ on this list is to "reply to all" (and 
optionally/preferably delete all non-essential e-mail addresses).

Sorry about the troubles... this wasn't /my/ idea ;-)
