Hello, Explain me pleaze Why tuxkart return FATAL: puInit called without a valid OpenGL context. I have video card Matrox G550 with Mesa support drivers. All software: RedHat 7.2, XFree86 4.2, PLIB, development tools for compiling, etc. What must I do? |

This is a known bug with the half-assed version of Mesa that RedHat shipped with their 7.x series. Either upgrade to a newer Mesa or dive into PLIB and comment out the error message (Yuk!) it appears in a couple of places in the code - once in puInit and again in ssgInit. The version number reported by this Mesa library claims to be the same as an official Mesa release - but in fact it's missing some important bug fixes that were put in just before the Mesa team released it. I avoid using both RedHat and Mandrake Linux because they do this kind of thing *way* too often for my liking. Hello, I am trying to compile and run different games that use plib and it works on some of my Linux boxes but not on others. All boxes have Mesalibs 4.0.1 and plib 1.4.2. I have installed the demos for both Mesa and plib I have no problem running any of the demos from Mesa. On a linux box running redhat 7.2 with a Chips & Technologies CT69000, the plib demos run fine but on a box with a 3Dfx Interactive, inc |Voodoo Banchee, I get the following error: FATL: puInit called without a valid OpenGL context. Any ideas. Pete Kelly |

It's certainly OK to run 'configure' and 'make' multiple times - however, if you changed the system configuration between 'configure' runs, you sometimes need to remove the file 'config.cache' because the configure script caches' certain things when it runs so it doesn't have to recompute them next time around. That's a pain, but it's not unique to TuxKart. > > Steve, is there any way to keep the help screens open longer? They "time > > out" after 2 seconds. Anyway, if you look in src/status.cxx on line 388 (inside the function "drawGameIntroText") and line 428 (inside "drawGameRunningText"), you can change the numbers in the 'if' statements to increase the time that the help/intro/credits/about/versions messages stay up. FYI: The HELP message says: Press SPACE to toggle the menu. Press ESCAPE to exit the game. Joystick: A - Accellerate. B - Brake. C - Use an item. D - Ask to be rescued. L - Pop a wheelie R - Jump. Keyboard: ARROWS - Steer, accellerate and brake A - Pop a Wheelie S - Jump F - Use an item. D - Ask to be rescued R - Restart race. P - Pause. The problem with changing the default for 'mousetrap' is that for systems that *NEED* mousetrap (Voodoo-1, Voodoo-2, Voodoo-RUSH, etc), it's very important that mousetrap is on to start with otherwise there is a serious risk that you can *appear* to have locked up the machine. (In fact, it's not locked up - but it looks that way). Probably, there should be either a config file or a shell variable to set up which is the default. ----------------------------- Steve Baker ------------------------------- Mail : <sjb...@ai...> WorkMail: <sj...@li...> URLs : http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 http://plib.sf.net http://tuxaqfh.sf.net http://tuxkart.sf.net http://prettypoly.sf.net http://freeglut.sf.net http://toobular.sf.net http://lodestone.sf.net |

Thank you to Steve & Mads! It works. I obviously made a newbie mistake of some sort. I asked about deleting directories after running "make install" because Tuxkart was giving me error messages referring to the plib directory I had deleted. I assumed that running configure & make multiple times was OK. They would just overwrite any files they created previously. This must be wrong. When I deleted the Tuxracer directory I was working with & created a new one from the tar.gz, it installed with no problems. What is the proper procedure to follow when you get errors in ./configure or make? Steve, is there any way to keep the help screens open longer? They "time out" after 2 seconds. (I really want to study those credits ;) Also, can I make "disable mousetrap" the default? It seems to revert to "mousetrap" when you close the game. Thank you, it's a real pleasure receiving a response from a program's developer! Hopefully I'll learn enough to help others out. Carl |

The PLIB examples programs cannot be 'make install'ed - the idea is that these are source code examples that you'll want to look at, edit, whatever - so installing the binaries and deleting the sources is just silly. All the other things (PLIB itself, TuxKart, etc) can be 'make install'ed and then deleted if you aren't interested in the beauty and artistry ...even, perhaps, the *poetry* of our source code. OK, I appreciate all the help. I know I'm way over my head now.... I have all the Mesa RPMs installed (mesa, mesa-common, mesa-common-devel & demos) I'm running on the nvidia 1.0-1512 drivers (new last week) This is verified by seeing the nvidia splash screen. So far I have not noticed any problems - Tuxracer still runs perfectly (even after a reboot). Some of the plib demos work and some don't. Do I need to run these from the command line? WavingFlagDemo works fine from KDE but, from a terminal I just get "command not found". I must be missing something. Steve, the glut.h file is indeed in /usr/include/GL You are correct about /usr/lib/libglut.so however, the libglut.so file is in user/X11 R6/lib (several other glut files are also here as well) A glutfx is in /user/X11 R6/bin What do I do? Just move these files? Some files, all files, 1 file? Now a more general question, I have been expanding, configuring, & making all these programs from /home/downloads I was under the assumption that these could be deleted after a "make install", this is obviously wrong. Where should I be expanding these files, in separate directories? (Tuxkart, plib, plibexamples, etc) Should I move them some ware else after "make install"? Thank you! |

Argh, as Steve pointed out, mixing the nVidia and Mesa stuff may or may not be a very wise thing to do. I apologize for not paying proper attention! Secondly, it occured to me, that I actually never did compile tuxkart on my mandrake 8 system - I did on my 7.2. I just tried, and it seems my version of plib (1.2) is too old for the version of tuxkart (0.0.6) I have. (The homepage states 1.4 of plib, but the configure script does not check, it seems). With respect to glut, etc. Here is where my headers go (which is wrong, according to standard, but at least they are found) [madsdyd@ripley tuxkart-0.0.6]$ locate glut.h /usr/X11R6/include/GL/glut.h [madsdyd@ripley tuxkart-0.0.6]$ locate glu.h /usr/X11R6/include/GL/glu.h After installing the plib library, I have no troubles compiling tuxkart, and it runs with approx 0.3 fps on my laptop :-/ I have only ever installed a mandrake 8 on a nvidia machine once, and there I installed the neccesary mesa stuff _before_ installing the nvidia driver. That worked well, with respect to the opengl stuff. > 3 Since you are running Tuxkart successfully on 8.0, what additional > programs did you need to install that were not included on the install > CDs? Is Plib the only one? Both TuxKart and TuxAQFH rely only on PLIB, OpenGL/Mesa and GLUT. GLUT also depends on GLU - but that should be *it* - nothing else. Sometimes distributions don't install the necessary development libraries that you would require to install the game. The runtimes are there, which is why Tuxracer works, but there are no devels. The solution would be to take a look at your installation cds and see if you can find an RPM of glut development libraries. If you can't you'll have to download them. rpmfind.net is usually a good place to get hold of these things. Those functions are part of the Linux Kernel so they *must* be there if you are using Linux, UNIX, BSD...?!?. It can only be that some system header file is missing I think. What version of what OS are you using. If it's Linux, what Distro? You are correct that the network stuff isn't working - but I don't currently have an easy way to turn it off. ----------------------------- Steve Baker ------------------------------- HomeMail : <sjb...@ai...> WorkMail: <sj...@li...> HomePage : http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 Projects : http://plib.sf.net http://tuxaqfh.sf.net http://tuxkart.sf.net http://agtoys.sf.net http://prettypoly.sf.net http://freeglut.sf.net http://toobular.sf.net |

Hi, I can't compile the newly untarred tuxkart-0.0.5.tar.gz )-: Here are my errors: c++ -DPACKAGE=3D\"tuxkart\" -DVERSION=3D\"0.0.5\" -DHAVE_LIBPLIBUL=3D1 -D= HAVE_LIBGL=3D1 -DHAVE_LIBGLU=3D1 -DHAVE_LIBGLUT=3D1 -DSTDC_HEADERS=3D1 -D= HAVE_GL_GL_H=3D1 -DHAVE_GL_GLU_H=3D1 -DHAVE_GL_GLUT_H=3D1 -DLINUX_JOYSTIC= K_IS_PRESENT=3D1 -DTUXKART_DATADIR=3D\"/usr/local/share/games/tuxkart\" = -I. -I. -g -O2 -O6 -Wall -c guNet.cxx guNet.cxx: In method `void guUDPConnection::disconnect ()': guNet.cxx:62: `shutdown' undeclared (first use this function) guNet.cxx:62: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each function it appears in.) guNet.cxx: In method `int guUDPConnection::connect (char *, int)': guNet.cxx:81: `socket' undeclared (first use this function) guNet.cxx:154: `bind' undeclared (first use this function) guNet.cxx: In method `int guUDPConnection::sendMessage (char *, int)': guNet.cxx:176: `sendto' undeclared (first use this function) guNet.cxx: In method `int guUDPConnection::recvMessage (char *, int)': guNet.cxx:208: `recvfrom' undeclared (first use this function) make: *** [guNet.o] Error 1 It's just a hunch, but is the net-thingy not working right? I don't have a valid way to play TuxKart on a net (yet), so can I just compile without networking (untill a better fix, of course!)? ~~ Q: ``What do you get when you cross an insomniac, an agnostic, and a dyslexic?'' I do two things with that variable: 1) On the title screen, I load a lower resolution texture for the Voodoo - and back when I wrote the code, that was a reasonable way to check for a Voodoo without the hassle of checking glGetString(GL_RENDERER). 2) I use that same environment variable to render a cursor (rather than using the one from the Windowing system)...and also to force the cursor into the center of the screen. Both of these things are needed for Voodoo-1 and -2, and also for Voodoo-3 in full-screen mode. In this case, it's not enough to know that it's a Voodoo card - you also need to know how it's been set up by the user. I guess the present check works under Linux/Mesa - but I have no idea how to tell what's going on under Windoze. I'll be *SO* glad when Voodoo-1/2's are out of circulation and the old full-screen-only drivers for Voodoo-3/4/5 are dead and buried. -- Steve Baker HomeEmail: <sjb...@ai...> WorkEmail: <sj...@li...> HomePage : http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 Projects : http://plib.sourceforge.net http://tuxaqfh.sourceforge.net http://tuxkart.sourceforge.net http://prettypoly.sourceforge.net |

It's no problem. It still runs, they only really noticeable thing is that the backs of Tux and Gown are pink, and I saw the proper version when I ran it with PLIB 1.2 and TuxRacer 0.0.3. Just figured you had no way of noticing, so I'd let you know. The other problem I had is that using a Voodoo 3 under Windows I had to set MESA_GLX_FX to something to get it to work, though that doesn't do anything under Windows. I'd try fixing it myself, except I have no idea how to check if someone is using a Voodoo under Windows. |

That happens sometimes when I edit a 3D model using AC3D. Seemingly at random, it'll replace relative file paths with absolute paths - which means that (as in this case) the program will look for their locations on MY hard drive rather than where they should be. I'll try to get to fixing it - but tonight I have to complete a chapter of a book I'm writing with Mark Collins - and he needs that by 10am tomorrow. If you are desperate to get something going, either: 1) Hack a script to erase all of the leading path up to but NOT including 'image/'. Apply this to all of the '.ac' files. OR 2) Make symlinks to make it appear as if the files are installed wherever you have them. I'm terribly sorry about this - but whenever it happens, I have no way to know that the files were corrupted - because (of course) they continue to work on my machine. -- Steve Baker HomeEmail: <sjb...@ai...> WorkEmail: <sj...@li...> HomePage : http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 Projects : http://plib.sourceforge.net http://tuxaqfh.sourceforge.net http://tuxkart.sourceforge.net http://prettypoly.sourceforge.net |

I got TuxKart running under both Linux and Windows 2000. Using the CVS version of both PLIB and TuxKart, it isn't finding some textures properly. The ouput is: ssgLoadTexture: No such file or directory WARNING: ssgLoadTexture: Failed to open 'FILENAME' for reading. Just in case anyone's interested, there is an article being written about TuxKart in the French magazine 'Login'.
