Thank you to Steve & Mads!   It works.  I obviously made a newbie mistake 
of some sort.  I asked about deleting directories after running "make 
install" because Tuxkart was giving me error messages referring to the plib 
directory I had deleted.

I assumed that running configure & make multiple times was OK.  They would 
just overwrite any files they created previously.   This must be 
wrong.  When I deleted the Tuxracer directory I was working with & created 
a new one from the tar.gz, it installed with no problems.  What is the 
proper procedure to follow when you get errors in ./configure or make?

Steve, is there any way to keep the help screens open longer?  They "time 
out" after 2 seconds.  (I really want to study those credits ;)  Also, can 
I make "disable mousetrap" the default?  It seems to revert to "mousetrap" 
when you close the game.

Thank you, it's a real pleasure receiving a response from a program's 
developer! Hopefully I'll learn enough to help others out.  Carl
