Actually, no it isn't.  As long as you redistribute code under the GPL, 
you can take somebody else's GPL code, simply put your name in the 
copyright notice, and you are not violating the GPL.

You're thinking about the BSD or X11 license.

Still, on principle, I don't agree with removing authors' names from code.
