the reasons i was doing this in the form of a patch is that it gives you the
opportunity to try/review it and give me comments.

some maintainers/devs also prefer it to be that way.

i sure do, but i warn you [again] that i don't have much C++ knowledge.
that said, i always test what i upload/modify.
