Am I imagining this or did there used to be a method in the Python API  
to get the sound level from the microphone?

I want to monitor ambient noise levels and use the feedback to control  
the volume before using TTS to make announcements: "There's a tornado  
warning for your area!" or "Don't you think it's time to go to sleep?"
