I've been trying to get past just the second step but I'm stumped at this error!

    [root@linux turck-mmcache-2.4.6]# export PHP_PREFIX="/usr/local"
    [root@linux turck-mmcache-2.4.6]# $PHP_PREFIX/bin/phpize
/usr/local/bin/phpize: cd: /usr/local/lib/php/build: No such file or directory
/usr/local/bin/phpize: cd: /usr/local/lib/php/build: No such file or directory
mv: cannot stat `build/rules_pear.mk': No such file or directory
/usr/local/bin/phpize: /usr/local/lib/php/build/pear.m4: No such file or
    directory
aclocal: `configure.ac' or `configure.in' is required
autoconf: configure.in: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/m4: configure.in: No such file or directory
    libtoolize: `configure.ac' does not exist
Try `libtoolize --help' for more information.

I had the same problem.  I installed the php-devel rpm for the same version of php that was running (4.3.2).  Or you can recompile PHP to include development tools.
