Is it possible to compile the RedLight client in Windows 2000 using j2sdk1.4b3 or older. If so, how? If not, what should i do to be able to compile? Hey all, The Hotline client Tube has been renamed. It's now called Red Light. Red Light consists of a client called rl (this is the part that was formerly Tube), a server called rld, and a few tools such as rlget and rltest. The Red Light website is at http://redlight.wox.org. Because some clever bastard already registered redlight.sourceforge.net though, and because SF support won't give it to me, the "Tube" project page at Sourceforge will still linger on for a while. The latest Red Light build is 20011005. It's good. You can get it via Hotline or HTTP at redlight.wox.org. Enjoy, |

Sorry to disturb you with such meaningless matters, but I CAN'T GET TUBE WORKING. It sais there it requires wasbeer libraries and I can't find them anywhere (so I'm stupid, so shoot me ;-). The thing is I made it work some time ago (with Redhat 6.2 and JDK 1.2) but now with Mandrake 8.0 and JDK 1.3.1 i wants the damn libraries. If you could guide me towards HOTLINE, I'd be very gratefull. Thanks! |

Hey -- There's a Tube 1.0b3 prerelease (.jar file only) on the Hotline server at awacs.dhs.org. The 1.0b3 prerelease fixes a large number of bugs over 1.0b2 and incorporates some nice UI enhancements. One added feature is support for different nicknames per server. The best thing about the 1.0b3 .jar file, however, is that it contains an almost complete (1.2 level) Hotline server called Isis. To play with Isis, you can type something like: $ java -cp groomed-<version>.jar groomed.isis.Isis --help Isis is still experimental, so you may run into problems. If you do, please let me know. In any case I'd appreciate it if you could give the server at awacs.dhs.org a good pounding -- I mean just hammer away at it and see if it keeps working. More news later ... Thanks, |

Salutations all, I've got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that Tube will never make the 1 June deadline that I promised for Tube 1.0b3 / 1.0. The new target is to deliver between the 14th and the 21st of June. The good news is that I got so bored finding and fixing bugs in Tube that I wrote a Hotline server last night. Good news? Yes, good news, because to write the server I had to scrutinize the Hotline protocol code that underlies Tube, and this in turn lead me to uncover a number of hidden bugs and subtle breakages that would have otherwise surely slipped my mind and ruined your day. So you see, the moral of the story is to just never do something you don't enjoy. At least that is what I hope the moral is. In any case, this means that Tube now finally has a Hotline home (most of the time at least). The server is still very spartan, with the only thing you can do being chat. But if you fancy some smalltalk, or just wanna say hi, don't be shy, and point your Tube or "brand X" Hotline client to host awacs.dhs.org, port 5500. The code for the server --if you're that kind of person-- is in CVS, as always at: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/tube/groomed/hotline Finally, let it be known that the first three people to log in will receive an authentic Amsterdam bottle containing authentic Amsterdam beer (if I'm not in, send me an email with the time / date + IP address of your login, and I'll get back to you) -- I promise you, spam never tasted this good! For RedHat Linux 7.1 (and similar) users: During what turned out to be an agonizing installation of RedHat 7.1, I ran into an incompatibility between RedHat 7.1 and Java 1.3 which causes Tube to hang immediately on startup. I've released 1.0b2-2 .rpm's to fix this problem, as always available at: http://tube.sourceforge.net There are no benefits to 1.0b2-2 over 1.0b2 except that it works on RedHat 7.1 and similar Linux distributions. I have no idea how many of you are actually using Tube on Linux, but how can I resist this excuse to vent some frustration? Thanks, |

Tube 1.0 beta 2 ("mostly harmless") was released the 10th of May 2001.

This release brought to you courtesy of packaging work by Finlay Dobbie and
Ramco v.d. Woestijne. Art direction by John Tull and Oliver Soell, with
Rodney Hurlbut starring as the Mad Professor. Distribution by Sourceforge.
Highlights:
- Problems with building / running on MacOS X solved.
- Native packages for Windows and MacOS X.
- Upload resume support (was planned for post-1.0!).
- Right-click for contextual menu had been broken on Windows forever, but
it works now.
- New single window interface and other interface enhancements.
- Fix for problem where downloads would not start sometimes.
- Now reports transfer queue position on downloads (if server supports it).
- Better Java 1.3 citizen.
- Many possible sources of failure have been removed from the
Hotline protocol libraries, including problems with task
handling and file transfers, and API documentation has gotten a
preliminary review.
Lowlights:
- Tube monopolizes the audio device. Workaround: start the applications that
want to use audio before you start Tube.
- In a few rare cases, Tube may hang.
- On MacOS Classic, Tube always resumes downloads, even if you tell it not to.
- On Windows, you have to be careful naming your bookmarks.

The announcement is a few days belated because the 1.0b1 release turned out
to be broken in many subtle ways:
* Release 1.0b1 core dumps on MacOS X / Darwin.
* The initial .jar package only worked on Classic MacOS.
* There was something wrong with the initial .tar.gz package as well but I
can't even remember exactly what it was.
In other words, 1.0b1 is sort of an edgy release, and if it hadn't been for
the quick wits of John Tull, Rodney Hurlbut, Oliver Soell and strobe
anarkhos, who pointed out some of the more obvious deficiencies in the
initial packages, it would have been so edgy that it would have probably
fallen off of your hard disk. So all thanks to them.
To summarize, give 1.0b1 a try only if you don't mind to report bugs. Also,
don't try to run it on MacOS X / Darwin, because it will core dump. If you
prefer to wait for 1.0b2, that release is scheduled for the 7th of May
(average slippage time so far: about 1 year and 5 days).

I'll release beta 1 .jar, .rpm, .tar.gz and .sit.bin distributions later today or tomorrow, so the packagers can start doing their thing. There's a number of UI features that I didn't get to, but Instead of slipping the schedule I've decided that these will simply appear in the next beta releases (even though that breaks the promise that no new features will be added in the beta releases :)) Cheers, |
