[trustees] stage 1 completed

All,

I cleaned out a lot of the linked list handling last night, which frees 
me up to work on the hard link issue.  I've already figured out how to 
solve it and speed up trustees significantly, and I think it will take 
impressively few changes.  A couple days ago, I was getting a haircut 
and it came to me ;) I might need some help testing by the end of the 
week.  (I haven't synced up the public repository yet).
