PAM is scary. Really really scary. This means that we must understand it as deeply as possible.
The first version of TM removed the /etc/pam.d/login file.
Much fun ensued.
Peripherally related to PAM, you can adust (or empty) /etc/securetty to prevent root from getting in various places.
