The problem isn't selecting the correct IP, since the server (and the rest of the games in the network) will use the IP address the server sees, which must be a network reachable address. The problem with that bug is that if a user has multiple network cards, the user can't select which one to use. This is in the code,
Enumeration enum1 = NetworkInterface.getNetworkInterfaces();
There was a thread on the forum about it here as well,
I think this is a fairly rare bug.

Subject: [Triplea-develop] IP Address Patch
The patch I attached allows the player to select the IP Address themselves when hosting a game on the lobby or network. I haven't been able to test it on the lobby, because it's been down, but it worked fine when hosting on a network.
