Can we have another IRC session? I know its difficult to manage with the different time zones, so I suggest that at least tommy_butler and defyance get together and discuss things and accordingly update the rest of us through the mailing list. --- Stefan Ilivanov <ili...@ma...> wrote: > > Eran Uzan was finished before few days pkgutils with > full dependencies > support, Ports series 0.2.0 will come out soon, need > to cleanup some thing > with GNOME 2 and after that will be out, few days > maybe. Groan! I know... we had this entire discussion last time also when we were deciding a date/time for IRC. But how come you're connected now? Isn't it the middle of the night? Webmin also has an option of configuring the server to listen on a port other than 1000, at the time of installation. I agree that we sh get onto IRC if possible... what would be a suitable time? I'm abt 5 and a half hours ahead of GMT, so anytime between 4 AM GMT to 12 PM GMT would suit me. Can you make it in that slot? Otherwise we can stick to the forum. --- Benjamin Smith <def...@co...> wrote: > Yes, it is implemented as a seprate server, > listening on port 1000. > > We may want to take a different approach than this > perse, due to the fact > that Webmin has been out for a while and "crackers" > will probably be > sniffing that port. > > I took a bit of a break from the project to regroup > on some things that were > going on at work. > > Stuff is back in order now, the code I was working > on at work is released, > and I am free for discussion. Stefan Ilivanov wrote: > It's there any progres with the administration system ? I've brought forward the I/O utilities code which is part of the webmin base about 18 sub releases. It includes an implementation of C flock(3) in pure Perl which isn't portably available and is error-prone in the core of the Perl language itself. I've been planning something out which I probably should present for public approval before going forward with it anymore. I already have figured out how to implement this proposed action, so this isn't a pie-in-the-sky idea. It's a sub-sub project looking for approval and feedback. I propose that a seperate apache server be created to specifically handle the web admin. It should listen on a different port, and be compiled differently than the main thttpd web server. There are several reasons this should happen, and several reasons why it is beneficial. I'll go over these from this point forward. Due to the nature of a dedicated server, we can profit from tactics which wouldn't work for the main server. (read on) The seperate apache binary can be a mod_perl server and still be a superfast, streamlined process. Because only handles a few documents and CGIs it keeps its registry optimally small. There's nothing faster than RAM, folks. The dedicated server can be compiled with the inclusion of the base webmin code and its supporting libs without losing performance; even GAINing performance by a significant measure. The dedicated server can be compiled with the EXclusion of more apache mods which would otherwise be neccessary on a fully-functionally public apache server. (eg- we don't need to compile it with a bunch of language packs which aren't used as the OS native language, no need for logging when base code already handles this much better with a searchable interface, no need for huge mime db, no need for server-side scripting support other than the perl, AND a whole bunch of other stuff.) The seperate httpd is going to be very transparent and have a verrrrry small memory footprint while demanding fewer cpu cycles. The dedicated server can be safely limited to a small number of child processes. A seperate apache binary allows us to avoid getting muddled by, and muddling up further the public web server with all its issues. We remain clear of the main server's operations that have nothing to do with us: load balancing policies for public documents shouldn't interfere with us Think about it for a moment: how can web admin fix a hanging server if it RUNS ON IT? We don't need the same storage schedule, we don't need to run the same cron jobs, and the pub server really doesn't need to be messing around with ours! --especially if the inroad I'm working on provides a further layer of security between the web admin and the web browser by putting risky jobs in que for later admin approval with strictly onsite system access. I want my own crontab. Any special firewall rules for our server don't need to slow down the main server, and vise versa. Our logging semantics and subprocesses are different. We don't need to run extra helper procs and subprocs for our own programs. We don't need to include our access hits in the traffic reports, for a simple example. We need different levels of access to the machine's internals which we shouldn't have to build into the main server. We can easily target and eliminate intrusion attempts on the web admin (yes, they will happen) providing more security by staying away from the main server. If at any time we need or decide to use SSL, we're going to have to create another server anyway. This is gonna be a super pain in the butt if we have already built the webmin to work as part of the public server. This is yet another conflict we don't need. -- -Tommy Butler http://atrixnet.com I'm looking for work! contract or perm, full or part time Download my résumé http://www.atrixnet.com/resume the ooOPps Code Library http://ooopps.sourceforge.net/pub/ |

Hello everyone, I just found out that all of my email for the last 1 1/2 days has been getting deleted before it ever reaches me. If you have sent me any mail between now and then, please open up your 'sent' folder and resend/forward me back those messages. I'm sorry for the problems this has created --for you and me both! WHAT I'VE DONE FOR WEB ADMIN TO DATE ooPLoader http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=92246 --~=&%// The rest of these items are done, but not published //%&=~-- Secure client and secure server emulates portions of the SSH2 protocol and layers it over the CGI (common gateway interface) This is for both read only and read/write file IO based on preemptive configuration, as well as access to the shell which can be presented in its raw form, or encapsulated to handle shell commands without the knowledge it would take to $bash around the shell. This will let us easily AND _securely_ handle remote config for MySQL, sendmail, cron, whatever. Web Admin automated access logging, independent of Apache, other server Web Admin access log review/lookup scripts to probe server ENV, IPC sig defs, perl binary & perl runtime ENV, directory structure, That's all for now. And Tommy replies: <http://trinityos.sourceforge.net/> For example, go to the sourceforge-hosted ooOPps project website and visit the automated code library: <http://ooopps.sourceforge.net/pub/> There you can see some Perl CGI programming at work on the ooOPps sourceforge project server. Getting Perl to work took quite a while, because they are only providing suck-version 5.005_03 <http://ooopps.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/probeprl.pl> Still, getting PHP to work is supposedly _MUCH_ easier. -- -Tommy Butler http://atrixnet.com I'm looking for work! contract or perm, full or part time Download my résumé http://www.atrixnet.com/resume the ooOPps Code Library http://ooopps.sourceforge.net/pub/ |

Hi. If we have to use a forum may as well use one on Sourceforge. Anyway, for now I think IRC should be fine... So we should go along with Walid's suggestion of 5th June 20:00 GMT. But someone will have to guide me regarding the which server to connect to, which channels etc. since this is the first time I'll be using IRC. Thanks. Cool, I installed it on my home box last night and liked it okay, I'm going to poke at the code when I get home. to Stefan, the current version of webmin is .970. Its pretty basic, fairly friendly, I had no problems with the install(very simple shell script that handles that) It will setup Perl Modules for you, it has a Java Telnet/SSH applet, a command runner, File Manager, and configuration options simmilar to RedHat's old linuxconfig tool. The only problems I saw with this is the amount of space it took up. The tar file for it alone is 4.3Mb. Thats pretty hefty for something like this. I'm sure alot of the options it has won't be needed for the TPWA, and I would like to make the front end prettier. Re-inventing the wheel is not what I want for this project, but basing this on a solid foundation like webmin is not a bad idea. -----Original Message----- From: Stefan Ilivanov [mailto:ili...@ma...] Sent: Thursday, May 30, 2002 1:48 AM To: Smith, Benjamin Cc: 'tri...@li...' On my primary system LFS-CVS-20020519, Athlon XP 2x2.0GHz, with 1GB ram, I cant see any problems with the webmin, but this system is not for all users, it's very expensive, On my second LFS-3.3 system, based on Celeron 300Mhz, Slot-1, 64MB RAM, 8MB Permedia 2 AGP, with running Apache and Webmin, all the time swaps, during starting applications, or just to play mp3 files. Well, IRC is the only real way I can get around at work other than e-mail or a Web Forum (Bulletin Board). I sent this message already, a few hours ago actually, but I don't see it showing up anywhere, so here we are again. I finished the webmin script loader software I've been talking about. A summary of what this is and what it does follows my signature below this URL: <http://ooopps.sourceforge.net/ooPLoader.tar.bz2> -- -Tommy Butler http://atrixnet.com I'm looking for work! contract or perm, full or part time Download my résumé http://www.atrixnet.com/resume the ooOPps Code Library http://ooopps.sourceforge.net/pub/ A SUMMARY OF WHAT THIS LOADER DOES FOR SCRIPTS: -note: There is a HUGE amount of information that this summary doesn't cover. ooPLoader provides the functionality to load up Perl CGI applications prior to execution in order to gracefully and diagnostically handle compile-time errors, thus avoiding the dreaded '500' internal server error as much as possible. (Of course your code must be valid and the application must first be chmod-ded to a bitmask providing the file to run as an executable). ooPLoader uses external configuration files to allow any complete novice to load up configuration settings for any given CGI program associated with the settings files. External files which are used by the ooPLoader include: - ooPLoader-diag.plib - ooPLoader-log.plib - ooPLoader.config - ooPLoader.defaults - ooPLoader.plib ooPLoader comes with a suite of help programs to debug any CGI application which uses the ooPLoader. Customized access logging is automatic. These other stand-alone CGI applications are namely: - probeprl.pl (gets information about the perl installation on the machine running it, prints it to the web browser. It also gets and prints out system SIGs to which Perl has access.) - can-use.pl (debug scripts that use modules which are not part of the Perl distribution.) - env.pl (gets the environment information which Perl is running in and prints it to the web browser.) - err_log.pl (captures and outputs all errors and warnings generated by any CGI app using ooPLoader and prints it to the browser) LISCENCE: Free. Everybody can use it like they want. --like Linux. Fine print says... ooPLoader is liscenced under the GNU GPL. oooPLoader uses Perl code libraries (modules) which are also part of the ooopps project, and is liscenced under the open source GNU GPL. OTHER NOTES: Using the ooPLoader takes advantage of the Crypt::CGIsession module allowing CGI sessions to be encrypted without SSL connections. Cypher strengths used can be higher than 128 bits (depending on the user), with the choice to use any algo supported (md5, DES, DSA, RSA, tripple DES, Blowfish, Twofish, IDEA, etc.) thus eliminating the need for less secure and widely detested cookies. ooPLoader allows, by default, persistant CGI sessions. Session data is preserved on the client side by virtue of encrypted name-value pairs which are stored in hidden form fields or in urls. Session data may be passed to other CGI applications or to the same one as well. This works hand in hand with ooPLoader's dynamic configurability. This subject will be covered in detail in the Crypt::CGIsession docs. Crypt::CGIsession does not replace SSL. |

I had also downloaded and installed Webmin. It looks like a good tool. We need to figure out what (if any) its limitations are to determine whether its worth it to write our own web administrator from scratch... otherwise it'll just be like reinventing the wheel! Alternatively we could just write some more modules for Webmin as Stefan had suggested. --- "Smith, Benjamin" <Ben...@us...> wrote: > When browsing, I found this, we could look at and > tear apart the codebase > for this to get ideas if anyone thinks this is a > good idea.. > > http://www.webmin.com/webmin/ > > I'm already Downloading the code.. > > Thanks, > > Benjamin Smith > > _______________________________________________________________ > > Don't miss the 2002 Sprint PCS Application > Developer's Conference > August 25-28 in Las Vegas -- > http://devcon.sprintpcs.com/adp/index.cfm > > _______________________________________________ > Trinityos-perlwebmin mailing list > Tri...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/trinityos-perlwebmin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
