Dryad is not paying for the DOI cost yet. When we do start paying I expect it to be substantially less that $1, likely under 10 cents. The primary advantages of using DOIs are: * Authors know what they are and understand some of the benefits. * DOIs assigned through EZID will be widely promoted (e.g., available in Google Scholar) * Due to the creation of the DataCite consortium, DOIs will become more common (and more commonly expected) for data content. Possible reasons not to use DOIs in TreeBASE: * Identifier proliferation is messy.
