IMHO, the Purl should be used anywhere you can reasonably expect a user to copy-and-paste a URL. Definitely in the citations. The Purl should at least appear on each page that a user might link to. One tactic we use with Dryad is to prominently display which server is in use (for example, compare the logo at top-left for http://datadryad.org and http://demo.datadryad.org ). It doesn't keep you from bouncing between servers, but at least you have an idea where you are. A better solution is to replace the Purls with some other URL on the non-production servers, but this adds some complexity to the code. --- Ryan |
