I already e-mailed this to Mike before I noticed this project. I'm posting it here for everyone's benefit.

TraySaver & Auto-Refreshing Icons

Quick Summary:
This is what I think is happening: A systray utility is re-creating its icon every few seconds and TraySaver notices the change and refreshes itself. In the process a window is momentarily activated which briefly takes the system focus away from what I'm doing -- only to return it a millisecond later when after deactivating that window. Sound about right? I seem to confirm this by exiting TraySaver or the offending program & the problem goes away.

The story:
I could not hide a program that Compaq included with the PC to watch the system for basic troubles (overheating, hard drive & memory problems, & misc. other items). It would
hide, but also reappear in the tray. I figured this was much like the ICQ problem described in the "Common Problems" area at mlin.net, so I just set TraySaver to ignore it instead.

I went back to web browsing and found that every time I opened the drop-down list in IE's address bar, it would within a few seconds automatically select whatever I was pointing at without me clicking anything. I also
found I couldn't enter an address manually in the address bar because the auto-complete list would appear partway through (as normal) and then disappear again (not normal) while leaving what I had entered so far highlighted. Of course this meant that typing the next character of the web address I was entering would replace everything I had entered so far! I wound up trying to go to http://.com at one point because of this.

So, I figure that I don't really need the Compaq system monitor and, after some fiddling, I finally figure out how to kill it. Disabling it eliminates my problem. However, I really shouldn't have to do that.

Thanks for your attention, guys.
