Here is the process to translate :

  1. You have to download Trancestris (see above the appropriate version you need (Windows, Linux, ...). Once downloaded, just install it.

  2. Then fire up Trancestris.

  3. Click on the icon which represents a green arrow on the left of the tools bar. This will open a little windows. In it, you have two fields. The first one is where the file is downloaded from (don't touch it), and the second one is where, on your hard disk, do you want to put the file you download. Please don't change the name of the file, keep "Ancestris_Bundles.zip".
You don't have to unzip that zip file. Leave it that way. Trancestris can read inside a zip file. So once downloaded, don't unzip it.

  4. Open the zip file you've just downloaded (Ancestris_Bundles.zip). To do so, click on "File" - "Open the ressources zipped file Ancestris_Bundles.zip", or click on the icon of the menu bar which looks like a folder (the one beside the green arrow), then select the file "Ancestris_Bundles.zip" by clicking on the "Open" button. It will be your "source", your model.
Then you have to choose a translation. What do you want to do? translate from English to Norwegian? From English to Spanish? Example: we want to translate from english to norwegian, so you will choose "Translate from English to Norwegian". Done"? let's go on.

  5. Click on "OK".

  6. On the left side you will find the tree directories available in that archive Ancestris_Bundles.zip. There are three main directories : AncestrisCore, AncestrisExtensions and Tools. AncestrisCore is the program itself. AncestrisFrExtensions are all plugins available for Ancestris. Tools is the program Trancestris, the one you use to translate.
You can navigate thru those directories, sub-directories. Select one of the main directories (eg. AncestrisCore), and expand it. Again, you will find the main subdirectories. Choose one, and expand it. You have to go to the last subdirectory of the subdirectory you choose (it's when there is no more possibility to expand it), click on it. When a subdirectory is colored red, it means there is something that needs to be translated. If it's blue, nothing need to be done (but it's a good idea to check though). If there is something that could be translated, you will see on the right side, the text to translate.

N.B.:

  • You have to know that the best fullfilled Bundle is always the english one named "Bundle.properties". Maybe you will find in it some sentences not already translated into english; it could be a good idea to translate them first.
  • You will see on the main screen (on the right side) that some sentences are colored. Some are red, some are black, some are blue. The red ones are not yet translated. The black and blue ones are already translated. Click on a red one, and begin your translation in the lower part of the editor. Your translation must be written in it. Once the sentence(s) is(are) translated, click on the "OK" button. Important: Don't hit Return at the end of the last line, because this would add a carriage return to the bundle.
  • From time to time, check even the black and blue ones. Some needs to be updated.
  • The difference between the black ones and the blue ones is that the blue ones are sentences which have been translated, but they have the same word in both language. Example, in english we can have "Table", and in french, we have the same word "Table".
  • You have to respect and rewrite the different sign codes, the html codes, etc, some sentences can contain.

Once your translation is done, save your work. Two possibilities are available and it's important to understand them well.

  • or you don't have finish your work, and you don't want to send it to the development team. You have to do "File" - "Save the whole ressources file". This will save the whole file "Ancestris_Bundles.zip", and of course with it, your work. You can click on the icon which represents a floppy disk.
  • or you have translated what you wanted to do, maybe you have translated everything or just a part of it, and you want to send it to the development team. Then you do "File" - "Send the localized files archive to the support Team", or just click on the little icon on the menu bar which represents a letter with a green mark. This method will create a resources zip file specific to the language you choose for your translation. For example, if you translated from english to italian, this will create a file named "Ancestris_Bundles_it.zip" in the same place as the "Ancestris_Bundles.zip" you have downloaded. It's that specific zip file (in my example Ancestris_Bundles_it.zip) you have to send to Francois, member of the development team (Email : francois AT ancestris DOT org so you replace the AT with a "@", and the DOT with a dot so "."). If you click on the little icon which represents a "letter", you will have to configure the engine which takes care of sending everything to us. No need that way to open your Mail client, this will be done by Trancestris itself. If you can't configure it, just send the whole file Ancestris_Bundles.zip after saving it.

Don't forget to tell François which translation you did (from which language to which language).
If you are not sure about what you did, translate just some sentences, and send the zip file (Ancestris_Bundles_xx.zip) to François (don't forget to save your work before :-) with "Save Translation file"). That way I will be able to validate your work, and you will be sure that the translations you will do later, will be ok.
