#2 CVS checkin/commit problem

Not sure if this is a bug, or something I've configured
wrong ...

tramp version gives:
$Id: tramp.el,v 2.42 2001/10/16 09:57:02 kaig Exp $

Using /[sm/foo@bar]/path/to/file

Editing, saving, dired - great

C-x v v

Prompts for comment - then gives in the *vc* buffer:

cvs [server aborted]: absolute pathname
`/path/to/file/filename' illegal for server

CVS tree lies under /path/to here - not under /path.

Any ideas?
