This doesn't happen on my system. But if you set tramp-verbose to 10, you should get a lot of messages what file-truename is doing. I wonder if maybe split-string fails for you? What does (split-string "/foo/bar" "/") return? On Emacs 21, it returns ("foo" "bar"). I think I should install XEmacs pretty soon so that I can test this stuff. Hm.
