#3 can't open remote file

I am using tramp version 1.04 with xemacs.

The transport is sm

When I open a remote file, the file is downloaded
but immediately I get the following message in
the minibuffer:

"blah.txt has been modified. Kill anyway?"

and whether I say yes or no, I next get the following
error:
