Greetings... I want to encode a DivX 576x304 video, but I want tovid to add black bars, so I can get a 720x480 mpeg2 file, just like the DeVeDe application does. How can I accomplish this? Why don't I just use DeVeDe? Because I need to do it with ffmpeg, not with mencoder. Any help? Cheers rodrigo |

If you used -keepfiles, then it is possible. Just use postproc on the video files as Joe said, then cd into todisc-work, remake the symlink in /tmp 1st, check the name in the dvdauthor.xml file - it will be something like /tmp/todisc-work
cd ~/todisc-work ln -s `pwd` /tmp/todisc-work #Also check the links in this dir - they should point to your new mpegs. # ie: /home/disaster/todisc-work/3-2.mpg -> /home/disaster/videos/8.mpg # They should be fine if you just replace the files and used the same filename # then reauthor the dvd $ dvdauthor -x dvdauthor.xml
It is a good idea when using todisc ( calling tovid ) to reencode a video, to double check the encoded file with mplayer, at the point where it pauses to ask you if you want to delete the tempory files tovid made. And of course if you have the space -keep-files is always a good idea :) grepper |

You can run postproc on the mpeg that tovid gave you, so you do not have to do the whole encoding step over. That should be easy as you know the exact sync delay. -- JoeHill ++++++++++++++++++++ "I betcha Leela's holding out for a nice guy with one eye." -Fry "That'll take forever. I recently used the todisc ubuntu package to make a DVD from an AVI movie I had. It worked ok, but the audio is exactly 2.5 seconds fast. I can use VLC Media Player to put a delay on the audio stream of 2500ms and then it's perfectly fine. I've browsed the forum a little but I didn't see a way to fix it without remaking the entire DVD, which is something I really don't want to do as it took over 11 hours. The framerates and size are as follows: 25 FPS at 588x244 the audio is mpga encoded at 48000 Hz I'm trying to make it into an NTSC DVD. -- PowerUser |

Hi tovidophiles, Todisc's man page has been updated in svn, with new examples as well. Any feedback on problems understanding the explainations of the new options welcome. Reminder that if you are a todiscgui user and are avoiding svn because of broken todiscgui there, you can just update the todisc script and replace the todisc in your PATH with it. You might want to update tovid-init.in as well as it features a better dependancy checking for todisc. ( run "make" before using "tovid-init" in your PATH as above ) grepper |

Finally got around to doing this, rev 2116/2117 + # if the nav_log is older that $INFILE, then remove the log + if [[ -e "$INFILE".nav_log && "$INFILE" -nt "$INFILE".nav_log ]]; then + ! $TERSE && echo "$INFILE.nav_log is older than $INFILE ... removing" + rm -f "$INFILE".nav_log + fi grepper |

Steven, I think that is a good idea. I'll try to get around to doing it tomorrow. Hi Robert, How about doing something like this: log_date=`ls -l --time-style="+%Y%m%d%H%M%S" xxx.nav_log | cut -d' ' -f6` mpg_date=`ls -l --time-style="+%Y%m%d%H%M%S" xxx.mpg | cut -d' ' -f6` if [ $log_date -lt $mpg_date ] then # The mpg file is newer...so it has been changed rm xxx.nav_log else echo "Using xxx.nav_log" fi It may not catch all cases, but it should be efficient in most. I hope this helps. Regards, Steven. I guess I learn something new all the time Actually this feature is new, using a saved nav_log makes idvid much quicker on subsequent runs, taking seconds instead of potentially minutes. Unfortunately it requires user intervention if the original file has changed on disk. Originally I had a second line in idvid output warning the user but removed it because it looked better without it and I thought the one line would suffice. for example: Using S0415-theincredibleworldofhoraceford.mpg.nav_log Please delete this nav_log file if S0415-theincredibleworldofhoraceford.mpg has changed. (or somesuch) Perhaps I should put the second line back in. grepper > :). > > Thanks for the assist. > >> grepper P.S please reply to the list so others with similar probs can be helped |

Hi *, OK, I got an issue I need some help on. I'm still embedded in TZ encoding, and I've run across a file that seems to be too short, yet it should be the right size. I've run tovid on it twice, and although the second run resulted in a much larger file, idvid still shows it to be a 34 minute video, not a ~50 minute video, as it should be. I did a burn (makemenu/makexml/makedvd) the other night and=20 when playing the dvd version the player abruptly stops. I'm adding the idvid -verbose output in case someone can spot something. (Caveat: I've been doing some cleaning in preparation for a move, so the computer isn't all connected right - so for now I'm running in text mode, which limits my options). By comparison, idvid, when run on the other files I have done, gives output with the proper length. Question. If mplayer or some other tool thinks the video length is wrong (and for the moment I am not able to switch into X and actually attempt this, but I will try tomorrow) how does makexml get the video length? Or is this done in the dvdauthor step? Furthermore, can it be overridden? -------------------------------- idvid Video identification script Part of the tovid suite, version svn-r2068 http://www.tovid.org -------------------------------- Analyzing file: 'S0415-theincredibleworldofhoraceford.mpg'. Following on my last post and also after some notes from Joe Friedrichsen - I'm now having difficulty making tovin (latest svn) run properly. It seems to see the .tovid/tovid_config file (which I'll attach) after 1) changing the first line '# tovid' instead of '# tovid configuartino file' 2) eliminating leading spaces followint the options. I now get a note that it is using the following options (ntsc, debug, overwrite) but fails because it sees the option and doesn't recognize it, even though that option is documented in the tovid manpage. Here's the output I get now. I've noticed that if I make a dvd with makedvd, and separate it into two steps: $ makedvd "dvd.xml" followed by $ makedvd -burn -device /dev/hdd "dvd.xml" that makedvd will delete the contents of the dvd/ directory, which just means it'll have to repeat the dvdauthor process in the first step. I normally like to make the dvd structure (so I can preview) before burning, so I like to separate these two steps. Semantically, "dvd" and "dvd.xml" should equate to the same thing. Is there something inherent that tries to convince makedvd to redo the authoring step? Just curious, but I'm trying to minimize the amount of time, and dvdauthor takes a chunk of it. And it doesn't always happen. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ David E. Hi potential testers ! New experimental feature: Using -switched-menus option will create a text menu with a showcase image that changes a new image or video when you use the down or up arrow on the remote to change to a new button This should work both with titlesets and the new -quick-nav feature (just added as well) * Added support for switched menus with -switched-menus Should be working with titlesets now too. * Added support for -quick-nav This will cause right and left arrow remote buttons to navigate between titles AND titlesets. * Added -skip-vmgm and -no-vmgm -skip-vmgm will jump to the 1st titleset on loading, but there will still be a VMGM menu if you wish to get to it. -no-vmgm will cause a jump to 1st titleset, and there will be no "Main" buttons to return to the VMGM and the menu button on the remote should return to the titleset menu rather than the VMGM. * TODO code cleanup and refinements, do Playall buttons for titlesets when -playall is passed, dialog to cancel out or continue on preview cancellation. Example of usage that uses -titlesets with a vmgm menu, and the first titleset without -switched-menus and the second titleset with switched menus: todisc -no-ask -out DVD -keep-files \ \ -titleset \ -files 1.mpg 2.mpg 3.mpg \ -titles "Valley of Darkness" "Fragged" "Resistance" \ -background farm.jpg \ -static \ -end-titleset \ \ -titleset \ -files 4.mpg 6.mpg 8.mpg \ -titles "Immortals" "Partings" "Reunited" \ -switched-menus \ -submenus \ -background bride_ship.jpg \ -static \ -no-ask \ -keep-files \ -end-titleset \ \ -vmgm \ -titles "Season One" "Season Two" \ -background farm.jpg \ -showcase bg.mpg \ -bgaudio bg.mpg \ -showcase-framestyle glass \ -menu-font Bard \ -menu-fontsize 44 \ -thumb-font ComicSans \ -thumb-fontsize 20 \ -rotate 10 \ -static \ -end-vmgm To use -quick-nav add this option outside of the -titleset and -vmgm groups where -out is. -skip-vmgm or -no-vmgm can also be added there. I used -static in the example for all menus for a quick test - any of them can of course be animated. thanks for testing ! have fun and please report bugs, grepper |

Ah, too bad. My thinking was that the length of the audio might be 'off' as compared to the length of the video, and so when it was encoded it was coming out too fast, ie. too much audio. It seemed to sound somewhat like the problem described in the avisplit manpage: BAD SYNCH When you split a file with avisplit and the A/V sync for the first file is OK but the sync on all successive files is bad then have a look at the output of tcprobe(1) (shortend). | V: 25.000 fps, codec=dvsd, frames=250, width=720, height=576 | A: 48000 Hz, format=0x01, bits=16, channels=2, bitrate=1536 kbps, | 10 chunks, 1920000 bytes You'll see the AVI file has only 10 Audio chunks but 250 video chunks. That means one audio chunk spans several video frames. avisplit can not cut a chunk in half, it only handles complete chunks. If you do, say, avisplit -s 20, it is possible that the first file will have 6 audio chunks and the second one only 4 meaning there is too much audio in the first AVI file. I couldn't have been too far off in my thinking, as after running that on the file, you now get 'too much' of a sol'n, in that now the sound is coming out too slow. Perhaps there's some way to tweak that transcoding so that you reach a happy medium? This assumes my logic is sound, which is a dangerous assumption at the best of times. What does tcprobe show for the original file? > > > mencoder -o finalmovie.avi -noidx -oac copy -ovc copy > > > concatenatedfile.avi > > > > Oh and I'll try to remember to try that too :). > > Hmm. If I don't chop up the file (these videos are 24-25 minutes each) > will the above command be of any use? I don't *think* that should make any difference as to whether it works. The reason this needs to be run a lot of the time if you are merging files is that (IIUC) when the files are merged, the audio can sometimes be mucked up, for similar reasons as when splitting perhaps? BTW, how come your messages aren't threading anymore? I just upgraded Claws, could that be it? -- JoeHill ++++++++++++++++++++ "C'mon guys.
