    I'm having trouble running install.php

    I have:
    OpenSuse 10.3 32bit
    uname: Linux jmarr-lt 2.6.22.13-0.3-bigsmp #1 SMP 2007/11/19 15:02:58 UTC i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
    mysql version: 5.0.45
    php version: 5.2.5
    apache version: 2.2.4

    apache is working
    php is working
    mysql is working
I have phpmyadmin installed and it is connecting to mysql ok

running install.php from the browser gives me this:
    0) $STAGE = (INT) $_POST["STAGE"]; else $STAGE = 1; include("./install/stage_". $STAGE .".inc.php"); //clear mem of temp item unset($STAGE); //run the stage write_stage(); //print it echo $tpl->fetchfile("index.tpl"); ?>

running install.php from commandline gives me:
    jmarr-lt:/srv/www/htdocs # ./install.php
./install.php: line 1: ?: No such file or directory
./install.php: line 2: syntax error near unexpected token `c'
    ./install.php: line 2: `Copyright (c) 2003, 2004 Nathan 'Random' Rini'

/srv/www/htdocs is the root of my apache server and that's where all the files for Otourny are
    all files have 777 permissions

any idea where I have gone horribly wrong? I don't even get error messages.

I have not installed phpBB but the install instructions imply that I only need to do that if I am installing Otourny manually. but since I am clueless about what's wrong, I am going to try install phpBB now and then try install.php again. if that fails, I'll try following the manual install instructions.

seems like my apache is not interpreting the install.php file correctly but all other .php files I try run fine.

    thanks for any clues

i installed phpBB with no problems but install.php still doesn't work - same output

I am going through all the steps for manual installation now

went through all the manual install steps without any problems but the result is the same

going to index.php after all manual install steps gives me:

Sorry, only PHP 4 is supported. PHP 5 isn't backwards compatible and breaks the site completely.

heh - ok cool. I must have missed seeing that requirement.
      thanks for the clue!
