Summary: legend display problem

Initial Comment:
while i am unable to plot with lines, the legend box generated with legend() command shows the mark of my plots crossed by a line.

so if i plot with 'ro', there is not solid line generated, but the legend displays a 'o' crossed by a line.

also, when i plot many plots (12 right now), the legend box is a way to big compare to its contents (a lot of white space in the bottom of the box).
