Act that bloody Rome baptized herself in Christian blood in spite of

her tolerance of religion. The apostle met with
sufferings on all sides; and having perfect liberty
of recantation at any moment, how did it come to pass, if he was
insincere, that he did not recant? Was he rational? Let his writing
answer! They are admired
by the best minds of earth. If he was irrational, let us have many more
insane writers! Was he honest?
If not, who is honest? Could he be deceived about the facts which he
saw and
heard? No! If he was, who can't be? He could not be mistaken, for
he _saw_, and _heard_, and _felt_--even to _blindness_, and, also, to

Assassination of his predecessor, and abjured the Protestant faith of
which he had previously been the champion, Champlain, like other
Frenchmen, who had followed the Duke of Guise, became an ardent
supporter of the new regime and eventually a favourite of the Bernese
prince. He visited the West Indies in a Spanish ship and made himself
well acquainted with Mexico and other countries bordering on the Gulf.
He has described all his voyages to the Indies and Canada in quaint
quarto volumes, now very rare, and valuable on account of their minute
and truthful narrative--despite his lively and credulous
imagination--and the drawings and maps which he made rudely of the
places he saw. His accounts of the Indians of Canada are among the most
valuable that have come to us from the early days of American history.
He had a fair knowledge of natural history for those times, though he
believed in Mexican griffins, and was versed in geography and
cartography. In 1603 Pontgrave and Champlain ascended the River St.
Lawrence as far as the island of Montreal, where they found only a few
wandering Algonquins of the Ottawa and its tributaries, in place of the
people who had inhabited the town of Hochelaga in the days of Cartier's
visits. Champlain attempted to {50} pass the Lachine rapids but was soon
forced to give up the perilous and impossible venture. During this
voyage he explored the Saguenay for a considerable distance, and was
able to add largely to the information that Cartier had given of Canada
and the country around the Gulf. When the expedition reached France,
Aymar de Chastes was dead, but two months had hardly elapsed after
Champlain's return when a new company was formed on the usual basis of
trade and colonisation. At its head was Sieur de Monts, Pierre du Guast,
the governor of Pons, a Calvinist and a friend of the King. After much

Ublished my own condemnation in a letter to the Bishop of Oxford. I
impute nothing whatever to him, he was ever most kind to me. Also, they
said they could not answer for what individual Bishops might perhaps say
about the Tract in their own charges. I agreed to their conditions. My
one point was to save the Tract. Not a scrap of writing was given me, as
a pledge of the performance on their side of the engagement. Parts of
letters from them were read to me, without being put into my hands. It
was an "understanding." A clever man had warned me against

Sometimes, however, we find them crudely executed as if they had been
taken direct from the mold. Clockmakers of that time were not so
inventive as we; neither had they had training in design, and as a
result we see little variety in these brass ornamentations. At one
period all these spandrels took the form of cherub's heads, an idea that
may possibly have been copied from the Italians. Later a pattern with
two cherubs supporting a crown was popular; and at a still later date
the head of the cherub set in a scroll is found. That is the pattern on
this one. The brass basketwork across the top is a relic of the old
bird-cage clock which just preceded this one, and was cast by the
metalsmith and then purchased by the clockmaker as were the spandrels.
