#7 invalid-byte-code symbol :initial-value

i get this in xemacs21.4.1 every time i receive a message (sending works fine)

(2) (error/warning) Error in process filter: (invalid-byte-code variable refere\ nce to constant symbol :initial-value)

it's been working fine for several months, but a recent debian (woody) upgrade broke it.

i'm new to lisp, but will try to dig around on it this weekend.
