Kenneth, After more discussion on the gnome lists it became clear that another widget the GtkText widget will work, and be much simpler to use. So our app will only depend on gtk not gnome. I was sent some code that does this for a python interpreter and I am going to rip it out and make it into a tn5250 stuff soon. So expect to see a real screen sometime soon.
