Initial Comment:
... if the association has no members at all. A fix is easy, we just need to check m_members at the beginning of the method:

    public Collection getMembersOfRole(Topic roleSpec) {
        if (m_members == null) {
            return java.util.Collections.EMPTY_SET;  // or EMTPY_LIST?
        }
        // ...
    }
