TM4J has special support for type-instance associations (see http://www.isotopicmaps.org/sam/sam-model/#sect-types or http://www.topicmaps.org/xtm/index.html#desc-class-instance ) at the API level, such that it is conventient for the user to manipulate these associations using these special methods.
However, TM4J treats these types of associations also specially internally, such that they do not show up as associations of the topics involved. Thus, TM4J currently does not reflect the data model of neither XTM 1.0 nor of the current TMDM draft.
(Probably, these associations also do not show up as associations of one topic map.)
See https://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_name=461F9C5D.505%40baldauf.org for some discussion on this.
Thanks to Lars Heuer for pointing out that this behaviour is TM4J-specific and not XTM-1.0-specific.
