I notice a pause between sending a multicast message and receiving it on
another node that I don't see with the replicated multicast.  Do you
know why that might be?

If you are interested in using an application for multicast testing, I
have an event service based on the SAF spec that I have been working
on.  It is what I have been using with TIPC.  It is still in
development, but it may be useful for some of your testing.   I have an
event server, and some publish and subscribe test programs.  I have a
bitkeeper view at
