I don't see any problem with it. When I decided to open the source of the original compiler that evolved to Tiny Cobol, I was just trying to make something useful of some code I have already thrown away. It was residing in my archival of "old crap things" and it got a revival now with the help of many friends. I don't answer for the others, but my personal opinion is that we make it wide open and protected from lack of openess, that's why I choose to put it under GPL.
