Hello, I have a midi file with multiple channels (say bass, tenor, alto, soprano). How to produce multiple mp3s with different volume distributions (say b=+0, t=+0, a=+0, s=+0; b=+0, t=-12dB, a=-12dB, s=-12dB; b=-12dB, t=+0, a=-12dB, s=-12dB; etc)? Thanks in advance for any help! Martin |

Hi, i get this: @Host TiMidity++-2.15.0 % ./configure checking build system type... configure: error: /bin/sh autoconf/config.sub -apple-darwin23.2.0 failed that mean, the CPU: Apple M1, OS: Sonoma 14.2 is not yet supported? Thanks |

Hi, When starting timidity in server mode and output to JACK with the command found in many wikis all voer the internet, it work fine but I get the following error message: $ timidity -iA -B2,8 -Oj -EFreverb=0 -s 48000 jack_client_new: deprecated TiMidity starting in ALSA server mode Opening sequencer port: 130:0 130:1 130:2 130:3 Couldn't start JACK device (`j') This is with timidity v.2.15.0 and jackdmp 1.9.22. In my config, the default ALSA sound card is the loopback device and JACK use the second card, which is the real hardware. But that's for the software using the ALSA output, and it should not matter for timidity when jack is running. If I remove the -Oj parameter, it work the same and without that complaining about that JACK device. Is it normal behaviour, and is it something I can do in order to not get that error message with the -Oj parameter? |

There's a -O switch to select output method. You should be able to set -OO to use libao with can interface with pulse directly, or -Os for ALSA. You can also use a graphical interface with -ia and try out different output methods in the 'Extend Modes' menu selection. Yair |

(alsa-oss packages) or padsp timidity ... (pulseaudio-utils); these wrap the program to route the sound directed towards /dev/dsp into a corresponding sound system. -- ---- WBR, Michael Shigorin / http://altlinux.org ------ http://opennet.ru / http://anna-news.info |

Please, can anybody help me ?
Since one week I can not play any midi file with Timidity.
Each time i try it with :
timidity ./example.midi
i get :
Couldn't open output device
I use Linux. I try some solutions from Internet but i not have any success.
For example, i try
cd dev
sudo rm dsp
sudo ln -s null dsp
but i get with
timidity ./example.midi
a
/dev/dsp doesn't support 16- or 8-bit sample width
Couldn't open dsp device (`d')
Somebody can help me ? Or have some idea ? I just want to finish my project
about micro keys but this problem stops any progress. Thanks for everything.

I have created simple midi files that contains MIDI Tuning Standard. One is Bulk Tuning Dump and the other is Single Note Tuning Change. Each customized tuning is registered in the tuning program number 1. The tuning program number 0 remains the default 12 equal temperament. Regards, TAMUKI Shoichi |

It will take me a while to remember how it works, but yes, Timidity can do this. I had it working in my own microtonal software before switching to Csound. Give me some time to go through my old code and stuff. Dave On Thu, Feb 25, 2021, 10:17 PM Daniel Tomas <da...@gm...> wrote: > Hi. > > I have done a Midi file and send it to Timidity. Hi. I have done a Midi file and send it to Timidity. After I send a micro tuning message to Timidity, no notes sound after that. I have read Timidity support real time micro tuning. I send to Timidity a "single note tuning change (real-time)" Inside Midi file in middle of that file i have : F0 7F 7F 08 02 00 SysEx message for real time single note tuning 01 Number of changes is 1 3E 4A 07 46 Midi key 3E (D) tuning is changed to a F F7 (EOX) 00 90 3C 5A 83 00 90 3C 00 00 90 3E 5A 83 00 90 3E 00 00 90 43 5A 83 00 90 43 00 00 90 45 5A 83 00 90 45 00 00 90 47 5A 83 00 90 47 00 00 FF 2F 00 26 Some notes will be played after, for testing, but no one sound My question is : 1) Timidity really have support for that midi message ? 2) Or i have done something wrong ? 3) Somebody can send me working midi file which contains "real time single note tuning" messages ? Please, i already have done already over 1200 lines of code to create a working micro tonal key in LilyPond, but i can not make working final midi file to sound with this instructions. Really, thanks to every help, will be welcome. Daniel Tomas |

Hello, guys and gals, Already posted a question here, so cross post: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1298529/timidity-occasionally-running-amok Here's the essential body of the question: ****** Running Ubuntu Studio 20.04. Occasionally I'll look out there and find timidity running, using up a whole CPU. I have not found the reason for this... it does not appear to be in use by any of the apps I am running (and can shut them all down, with timidity still spinning). I'm looking at the syslog, and I can see: syslog.1:Dec 8 07:14:31 Parker systemd[1]: Starting LSB: start and stop timidity... syslog.1:Dec 8 07:14:32 Parker timidity[713]: * Starting TiMidity++ ALSA midi emulation timidity syslog.1:Dec 8 07:14:32 Parker timidity[713]: ...done. syslog.1:Dec 8 07:14:32 Parker systemd[1]: Started LSB: start and stop timidity. That appears to be at boot. I have not had success in reproducing this. Most times, I boot up, and check, and it's not running. Sometimes, it's spinning. So, perhaps sometimes the "stop timidity" doesn't happen. Any suggestions on how to track this down? It's working hard! me@Parker:/var/log$ who -b system boot 2020-12-08 07:14 me@Parker:/var/log$ date Tue 08 Dec 2020 10:58:03 AM EST me@Parker:/var/log$ ps -o lstart= -p 847 Tue Dec 8 07:14:31 2020 me@Parker:/var/log$ ps -o %cpu,%mem, cmd -p 847 %CPU %MEM CMD 94.7 0.0 /usr/bin/timidity -Os -iAD ****** Additionally, I've been experimenting, trying to figure out a trigger, but have had little luck yet. I run with Jack, which I control with Jack audio connection kit. In addition, I have the following script run after startup: /usr/bin/a2jmidid -e & So, at this moment, I have timidity running at 100%. Jack is running. I stop Jack (through the connection kit), and I see that timidity process stays out there, but stops spinning. I start Jack again, and timidity goes back up to 100%. I stop Jack again, goes back down. Then when I start it again, timidity does not shoot back up. Very odd. Not suggesting that this "2nd time it stops" is normal or indicative. Just reporting what happened in this case. Any suggestions? Thanks! |

Hello Andrew, I am sorry for this delayed reply. And NOIKE-san, thank you for answering instead. From: Andrew Dabrowski <ajd...@bl...> Subject: Re: [timidity-talk] inharmonicity Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2018 14:21:45 -0400 > But my question is: what is the default behavior?? TiMidity++ acquires samples closer to the pitch from the GUS/patch or SoundFont and resamples appropriately in order to produce the desired tone. The pitch to be output is completely controlled by TiMidity++. So, the default behavior will be played in ET regardless of GUS/patch or SoundFont. To play with other tuning, please use the -Z option or MIDI Tuning Standard (MTS) SysEx. Regards, TAMUKI Shoichi |

Hello Andrew, I am just a user. But there was no reply from anyone for a long time, so I will answer it instead. In my understanding, TiMidity++ play them "as is", with no adjustment in default. So, if you prepared ET(Equal temperament) soundfont, TiMidity++ play by ET, if you prepared MT(Meantone temperament) soundfont, TiMidity++ play by MT, and so on. If a piano soundfont includes adjustments for inharmonicity at some samples, high and low for example, you can adjust the instrument's root frequency per samples via tune= option in timidity.cfg. Please see man timidty.cfg(5) for detail. Regards, TAMUKI Shoichi |

Suppose a piano soundfont includes adjustments for inharmonicity, so that pitches deviate slightly from ET, especially at the extremes (high and low). If I use timidity to play a midi file with this soundfont, without the -Z option, is the default to force the pitches into ET? Or will timidity just play the pitches in the soundfont without any changes? In other words, if I want hear the inharmonicity-adjusted pitches, do I need to use a specific frequency table with the -Z option? |

Hi Nick, You said "Good Morning from Ireland. I am hoping to build an all electronic barrel organ. Just pipes for decoration. Able to play MIDI files with a small pc." You will find Wurlitzer Band Organ Midi files - scanned from Wurlitzer music Rolls - out there on the net which might suit your purpose. Here is a link to hundreds of them..... http://www.wallace-venable.name/mechanical-music/Wurlitzer_Collection.html I play midi files using Timidity on a PC, I output the sound via a sound card with SP/DIF(optical) output to a Kenwood Stereo Amplifier with SP/DIF (Optical) input, which then play the music through stereo speakers. If you might be satisfied with sound of a lesser quality(or don't have the space inside your Barrel Organ for a Stereo Amp and Speakers, then buy one of the sets of 2 small computer speakers with a Woofer box ( possibly Altec Lansing ?) and plug them into your headphones output on the PC. These sets seem to be available in thrift stores/junk shops cheaply these days. I would definitely get the woofer box with speakers rather than just two speakers. You can experiment with different soundfonts to get the best match. hope this helps Graham |

Are there any plans to support SFZ directly? It looks like the most modern and forward thinking sample format available http://www.sfzformat.com/index.php?title=Main_Page. It is an open format. It has the advantage of a human readable definition file like GUS Patches have, but it is supported by modern editors like SF2 such as in Polyphone and Linuxsampler. FreePats is already using SFZ sound banks such as the Salamander Grand Piano http://freepats.zenvoid.org/Piano/acoustic-grand-piano.html. |

I couldn't find lsmidiprog, mididump, patinfo, sf2text, or wav2pat on http://timidity.sourceforge.net/ at all, but they were burred at the bottom of http://www.onicos.com/staff/iz/timidity/dist/download.html as timidity-tools-2.9.1.tar.gz <http://www.onicos.com/staff/iz/timidity/dist/timidity-tools-2.9.1.tar.gz>. For everyone's convenience, could you link to them from the new site?|| |

I've applied the bug fix to the Ubuntu source code; you'll find the fixed package(s) under http://martinwguy.co.uk/test It is probably enough to fetch and install timidity_2.13.2-40.3+nocrackle_amd64.deb (64-bit) or timidity_2.13.2-40.3+nocrackle_i386.deb (32-bit) I've also submitted a bug report to Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/timidity/+bug/1587215 so let's hope they apply the fix retroactively as part of the maintenance; If they do, their 2.13.2-40.4 will replace the above packages. Thanks for your help in resolving this issue M |
