Timidity seems to produce a timidity executable. It should instead produce a library and an executable.
If you check out http://soundtracker.org/ you'll notice a tracker for Linux. If you try Modplug, you'll see that Modplug Tracker can get samples from GUS, SF2, Wav, looped wavs, etc etc etc etc etc.
Timidity should work with the GPL tracker projects, such as SoundTracker, to share as much code as possible about deriving sound from samples. This would benefit both Timidity and the tracker programs, as they would both share the same code to access samples, and would both gain from eachothers' work in the area.
Timidity may also benefit from sharing mixing code and DSP code such as reverberation. There is A LOT to Timidity; most of it is usable everywhere.
