It would be nice if someone wrote a package that dealt with excessively large buddy lists.
Create two categories: priority and rotatable. Buddies in the priority section are never rotated, and those in the rotatable section are. As long as the priority buddies section is kept to the minimum, the rotatable section would check a certain number of rotatable buddies to see if they're online. Those that are online are added to an online exemption so that they're not rotatated out. After a certain interval, those buddies not online in the rotatable section are rotated out and a new number of buddies are checked. This continues until the max number of allowable buddies are all online.
While this doesn't provide the full benifits of having a buddy on your buddy list (like instant online notification), and has problems if you're setup so that only buddies can IM you, it should still be useful to those that need some way of having more than 100 or so buddies in their buddy list.
