    You are right : it is a little bit the both....
    Each string translator gets the string to translate. It is easier
    to translate "January" than to translate "Jan", so the
    abbreviation is done after translation, something like "substr
    (translate(string), 0, 3)".... It was 4 characters. I changed
    today to 3 characters in 1.8CVS, because you are right is the
    way English do (I think). The way it is done today in tiki is not
    perfect. I think we need to introduce a context like translate
    (string, abb=3). We have the same trouble with the table
    headings. English is short but it is not the case for all other
    languages, it will be something like translate(string,
    context=heading).
    Some more job to do :-)
