Rightly Assuming that the Server is a _very_ powerful machine and can do
this stuff for perhaps 10's of thousands of users simultaneously?
Nice comments everyone, however...
Who groks what a "Portal Engine" is? A wierd/cool possibility of Portal
Engines is that a room can be bigger than it looks from the outside (think
"Dr Who's Tardis" - a police phone booth from the outside but actually a
decent sized space ship from the inside).
I don't understand yet how to feed data to a Portal Engine to render but I
have some idea of what they make possible and how some of it works.
http://www.flipcode.com/ has very good info on a broad range of (advanced)
programming topics but focused on gaming related stuff. Search for "Portal
Engine" for more info.

i think that should not be a problem with a _very_ powerful machine.

hehe :) yes, thats what i am thinking of as well. I refer to an "Alice in
But we don't go the way of "Portals" IMHO, we use active objects. An active
object can interact with the user or create its own matrix where the user can
immerse to. So if you step into a portal then you actually immerse into the
portal and are in a new matrix. Same goes with houses, maybe some special
applications, and so forth..
