Thanks for the tips Mike (and the clarification Trevor, I *was* rather
thrown by "VM").
It's doing pretty much what I want now that I've added icewm and the
NET_FILE command, and boots noticeably quicker which is great. The only
issue now is that when I choose to shutdown TS from the GUI menu, I get a
screen full of error messages saying Gdk warning, error converting from UTF
to string (I think, I don't get long to look at them), although I only see
them if I've pressed F2 when booting TS and they don't seem to interfere
with the shutdown, so it's more of a curio than a problem I guess.
It also only seems to happen if I've logged off the rdesktop session and
reconnected at least once before logging off again and shutting down TS,
although I expect this is probably how the user I'm building it for will use

I think Mike means a WM (Window Manager), such as icewm or blackbox into
your image (you don't need a session for it).
