Hi there list, I've seen this problem discussed before but was not able to find a solution. The problem is a PXE boot with an Intel e1000e NIC. The system (Dell Optiplex 755) boots just fine but fails to find a DHCP server. A DHCP server is available in the network though. When booting the same machine with Ubuntu 10.04 LST all is well. The driver loaded is the e1000e and a lease is granted by the DHCP server. A "lspci" on the Ubuntu system reports the NIC as follows: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection (rev 02) A "dmesg|grep eth0" on the same system has the following result: [ 2.882658] 0000:00:19.0: eth0: (PCI Express:2.5GB/s:Width x1) 00:21:70:2d:26:cc [ 2.882661] 0000:00:19.0: eth0: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection [ 2.882685] 0000:00:19.0: eth0: MAC: 7, PHY: 6, PBA No: 1041ff-0ff [ 14.429804] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready [ 17.276879] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: None [ 17.277091] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready [ 27.948027] eth0: no IPv6 routers present As you can see the e1000e is in fact in use. A thinstation boot fails reporting that problably the wrong module is loaded for the NIC. An "ifconfig -a" does show eth0, but without an IP eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:21:70:2D:26:CC UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:260 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:5 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:25351 (24.7 KiB) TX bytes:2950 (2.8 KiB) An "lsmod|grep e1000e" shows the e1000e being loaded e1000e 130268 0 And the "dmesg|grep e1000e" shows the driver being in use 0000:00:19.0: eth0: (PCI Express:2.5GB/s:Width x1) 00:21:70:2d:26:cc 0000:00:19.0: eth0: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection 0000:00:19.0: eth0: MAC: 8, PHY: 6, PBA No: 1041ff-0ff e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: None A DHCP request fails: udhcpc (v0.9.9-pre) started script /usr/share/udhcpc/default.script failed: No such file or directory Sending discover... Sending select for 10.9.2.51... Lease of 10.9.2.51 obtained, lease time 86400 script /usr/share/udhcpc/default.script failed: No such file or directory It says lease obtained but ifconfig does not show an IP. Is this the "No such file or directory" which gets in my way? I am able to configure the NIC by hand using ifconfig. But DHCP wil not work. At the moment I am testing with just the e1000e module enabled, tried with the e1000 module but that one does not bind to the hardware. Does anyone know how to get DHCP working? I am at a loss :S a rtfm (with pointer) wil be appreciated. On a side note: When I had some other NIC modules enabled we - by accident - booted a VMWare client without operating system. The VM booted thinstation just fine. Regards Peter Kaagman |
