Tim, thanks for your help. The PDF does not appear to be generated, it is not in the folder containing the .tex file. Nor does a postscript file appear. Do I have a control feature that is turned off within Texstudio?

          That's very old. 

          Try it with TeXstudio 2.5.1 till then everything about the pdflatex configuration has been changes

          And check that you actually have a working pdflatex installed (e.g. from MikTeX)
