No

Using 2.10.8 on El Capitan 10.11.5. If the bottom panel is open, for instance, I can't close it using "View > Close something" like i can on Windows, nor using Esc or other user defined shortcut. The only way is to use the mouse.

you can't close the bottom panel with esc/close something.
That does not work neither on linux nor on osx and to my knowledge is the intended behaviour.

okay, correction: there is an option in option/shortcuts at the bottom: use esc for closing log.
If that is activated, it works is intended. So I assume, that this option is not activated.

    Works here as well.

Does closing work for other elements (in particular also leaving fullscreen mode)?

Now suddenly Esc does close the Log pane. Nothing else closes when pressing Esc or when choosing View > Close something.

What OSX version are you using? I'm on 10.11.5.

I'm also on 2.10.10 RC, but OSX 10.11.5.

I strongly doubt that this'll make the difference. It's rather some setting or internal state which influences the behavior. As you said yourself, it's working now for you on the same system.
